Hey guys I have a quick question for you. I just swapped my small block chev from points to the pertronix. I was having a little trouble with the points, now I'm having more trouble. The points were fine for the upper rpm's and normal driving, unless you punched it in the low rpm's. Now, with the pertronix it won't run right after (about) 2200 no matter how you drive it. It's kind of hard to describe, but it just starts "breaking up" and it doesn't come out of it. I have a brand new 750 Holley and I don't think it's a fuel or timing issue. One thing they recommend is a flame thrower coil. I am still running a GM Delco, and its getting old. Could the coil be the problem? If you need any other motor specs just ask. Thanks for any help! Dub.
Did you look at the instructions for help? They have several problem/answers in the inside back page. Maybe try a different coil. Mike
Do you have the gap set correctly between the two parts? I had a bitch of a time getting mine set right. Plus if your dist. has any slop in the bushings, it throws it off....I had to basically rebuild the dist to get it to work right. Sure like the end result though.... Also as stated above, make sure your dist is advancing....
That may be my problem, I wasn't 100% I had the gap right on this. I spaced the magnetic ring with 2 of the 3 washers that were in the kit...I think I'll take it apart and check that...Again.
If you have large hands, when I installed mine on a chevy I accidentally pulled a few wires loose in the process...
there is someone on the HAMB that works for Pertonix........I forgot his name. Maybe somebody knows who I'm referencing. He know what works with their system.
HI, I have had lots of expirence with electronic conversions. I convert all my cars, and my customers vehicles. I have used various units. Flame thrower coil is made in China and looks fancy, however they aint that good. On my personal car 60 Cadillac i still use a stock GM coil. the main thing is the primary coil resistance. Read the instructions again, and see what they reccomend for coil resistance. Original GM cars had a resistor wire between ignition switch and coil. Anyway the primary coil resistance should be around 2.5-to-5.0 ohms. If less you need to add a coil resistor, or get a suitable coil. Also VERY IMPORTANT use only carbon resistor type plug wires!! never use solid Packard 440 type non resistor wires with ANY Electronic ignition it will never run right!! I speak from expirence. This assumes everything else is set-up right.
Thanks for the info..I will check the ohms. Most of my tools are at work so I will have to check it monday evening. Please keep the ideas coming! thanks
PM hotroddon on this board...............he works at Pertronix......there is a guy named Marvin that works in the tech department too..........you can call the 800 number and talk to him.
I got it fixed this morning. I have good ohms at the coil, but I had a bad terminal end on the - side of the coil. (one of those duh moments) Fixed that and its running great. Thanks for all the help and ideas....
