These are some pics of my Dads cars from the early sixties. Hope this works! First time posting pics onthe H.A.M.B. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v349/badanglia/Dragster1.jpg
Well, I hoped they would be on the post but I guess this will do. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v349/badanglia/Channeled34.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v349/badanglia/Chopped46.jpg
Nice pictures. But we already have a RotHod - can't you find a different name that's less confusing? Mutt
The pics wre taken at Raimey AFB, Puerto Rico. Around 61, 62, timeframe. My Dad sold it all when he got orders back to the States.
Any chance it made its way to M***achusetts? Bares a slight resemblance to Desoto's ride that Skip built back in the late 60's in the Springfield (Wesfield) M*** area. Wouldn't that be a small world story!
Too freakin' weird. My grandfather was stationed at Ramey in that era. My dad went to high school there (cl*** of '65). In October '62 the 82nd Airborne took over his high school for the duration of the Missile Crisis. I'll bet money he recognizes some of this stuff.
Dude, Thats totally wierd! My dad put the car through the fence. He had scars that went from his left eye up to his hair line from going under the chain link. His name was John (Paul) Shirley.
Bizarre. My dad's going to get a kick out of this. His name's Bill Conwill, and I'm sure he used to hang around the base auto shop. His dad was a Major, the base protocol officer.
Just got off the phone with my dad, he doesn't think he knew your dad but he remembers the dragster really well (although he thought it had six carburetors instead of four). He said it was the first rail dragster he'd ever seen and thought that it was a real early Dragmaster ch***is. He also said he remembered a chopped Ford coupe with a blown Nailhead and wondered if it was your dad's '46 (although he thought that car was a '40, but that was forty years ago). He said the owner of the supercharged Buford blew the motor up in front of his girlfriend's house.
I'll have to look but I think that in some of the pics it had a six carb manifold. Man-o-man I wish my dad was alive. He died of lung cancer in 1981. He flew hueys (uh-1) and sprayed Agent Orange in Vietnam. Most of my memories of his stories are spotty (I was 12 when he died), and it was before he met my Mom so she doesnt know much either.
Oh yea they raced it and won, If you look at the pics ,the darker picture, there a trophy on the scoop. P.S. I believe he wrecked the car on the first test drive.
I'm sorry to hear your dad is no longer with us. Not a day goes by I'm not grateful mine is still alive to share his stories and his talents with me. I'm glad to hear they got the dragster back together after the wreck! For me that story had always ended with a wrecked dragster and the owner in the hospital, it's good to hear it's got a happy ending. My dad, like a lot of car guys, also ended up in Southeast Asia, but as a crew chief on F4 Phantom IIs. He smokes a pack a day though, to make up for the defoliant he missed out on, I guess. On a lighter note, I guess I should say thank you to your dad, because I'm sure that was one more step on the road to my dad becoming the car guy he did!
Man, just reading your post brought tears to my eyes. I miss my Dad. Your so lucky to still have yours. O.K. we've got to get back to the car stuff this is tearing me up. Ill probably scan and post the pics later tonight or tomorrow. Its time for the wednesday cruise-in. I think Ill go DRIVE THE **** OUT OF THE ANGLIA. YEEEEEHAAAAA!
I just had mine down to bare metal (the leading edge of the cowl) 12 months ago and I don't have that lower cowl patch weld on mine. Mine was already channeled when I bought it in '64 but the channel wasn't that radical. Mine also had a later Lincoln front end under it and the frame was lengthened (to get the axle back in the right place with the spring out in front of the axle) by welding 2 frames together. I never changed the channel but I straightened out the dangerous body mounts and I fishplated the frame over the ****ed wells then I boxed the ENTIRE frame (between the X member, too) The cars been damn reliable in the 41 years Ive owned it.
