I have been losing power under load in my 53 buick special...
I was getting backfiring and idle problems.... I have noticed that the choke does not want to open, even with the automatic choke coil off the carb the choke has no tension on it... I have discovered a spring has come off the drivers side of the carb...It's a little wound spring over by the idle adjust screw, it looks like it should be attached to something, but cannot figure out where...if you look here, it is part number 61-237 Fast idle cam spring... http://oldcarmanualproject.com/manua...age130_jpg.htm
This thing is loose... no tension on it

Any ideas or photos of this area that could help.. I'm betting that this is why my choke does not want to open and why I am stuttering and losing power.
I need to figure out how that spring is supposed to fit and keep tension on the choke

The fast idle spring goes around the fast idle cam (181 prefix). This spring is part of the fast idle system (in play up to the first 7~8 minutes after start-up). The choke plate has tension for other reasons.

Call me at 573-392-7378 (9-4 Mon-Wed central time); and I will happy to explain in detail.

So what I need to do is find out why my choke plate has no tension on it keeping it open? I know the coil for the choke works just fine...I can adjust that, but the carb never snaps back to open when it's removed.

And now it flat out refuses to hold idle when warmed up...
Just stutters and pops then dies irregardless of where the choke is or my throttling it up....then refuses to start til cooled back down...just turns over, no firing

    Hi Mike,

Did you ever figure out what was going on with your automatic choke and why there was no tension on it? I have a 1953 Buick Special and I seem to be having the same problem. It idles great but when it warms up and I take it down the road, it seems like the choke won't stay open and it vibrates shut. Any advice or help?

    Thanks,
    Gina

How weird! I just got a Carter WCD in a box of parts today. It looks good except grimy. If anyone wants it, PM me

I have a 2 bbl Stromberg, I think I have all the springs I'm supposed to have on there. I found out the choke stove pipe for the automatic choke was rusted off and blocked, and the jets aren't functioning....well, at all really. And I also found out that the screw that holds the points gap was stripped, and so I wonder if the combination of all these things are what is causing my problem.
Did you find the spring you needed?

Thanks man....so here is my current carter WCD issue... I am using my old thread as to not clutter things up.
I cannot figure out how the damn fast idle spring fits on and around the fast idle cam. Someone take pity on me and photograph how it fits as my Buick refuses to come off fast idle due to a malfunctioning spring.
