Ok..I picked up this wooden header panel at a local swap meet this weekend for 20.00 dollars. Now I have been looking and searching for over 2 hours without an answer...It looks like I am missing something..I installed the wooden header first and thought the windshield frame would fit under the it but its a no go...I cant figure out how it all goes together...been fighting it for 3 hours man..kicking my azz...How does the CHANNEL fit into all of this..? I cant get it to sit back any further either..I thought I had the wrong frame but I grabbed my 1928 frame and I am sure I have the correct frame..I looked on the Howells sheet metal site and saw whats called a METAL HEADER panel but now I am more confused...If I didnt ask something the correct way..PLEASE let me know..Notice in the last pic..( its the inside of a 1930 Coupe.) right on the inside of the frame..Is that whats I am missing..? Can I do without it..?
If you expand the streetrodder pic full size, you can see a vertical steel plate bracket on the driver side. It has holes that look like they would fit to your wood header T-nuts. So, I think you are missing that whole metal piece that the rear view mirror is on, and the 2 end brackets.
I am certainly no expert. and hopefully this will bump it to the top for the morning crowd. Your windshield frame is the same as my 31 coupe and mine fits under the metal header in your top right picture. I assume you have the windshield filler trim piece that goes on top of the cowl and below the lower windshield frame. With that filler trim piece installed, the windshield frame sits an inch or so off the cowl. If your windshield frame won't fit on top of the cowl filler trim piece and below the metal header, I would guess the windshield frame is not chopped the same as the "A" pillar on the car. Also, there is a visor panel that goes under the visor forward of the wooden header, and the lower portion of the visor panel sits on top of the windshield hinge horizontal surface. It has a "U" channel it that matches the "U" channel in your windshield hinge.. The visor panel, I suppose, was meant to close of air and wind noise to the cabin area, and cover the area between the "A" pillars above the windshield. This is the panel you are referring to in your last picture. I did not see that you had the visor panel. I'm sure my component identification is not the correct nomenclature for the items listed, but hopefully the explanation will be helpful. No doubt, the experts on the HAMB can fill in any missing or incorrect information. Good Luck....
I think there was an earlier post that might help. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=429762
I dont know why I keep looking at this pic and laughing my ass off..!!!! Ok..so we can agree that the metal piece Hitchhiker has posted is the piece missing.??? I dont have that laying around...you all sure I need it..? I see Howells sells them but after reading so many BAD things said about them...I am kinda paranoid to order anything....
You've got the wrong hinge. 28-29 hinge is different than 30-31. You might be able to cut that 'J' channel off that 29-29 hinge but new aluminum ones are cheap (PT# A-45411-A around 10 bucks). The piece in hitchhikers pic goes on first covering the front and bottom of the header and the channel inside is for upholstery to cover the header inside. Then the hinge and windshield are woodscrewed into the header through holes in this piece. One more thing, the brackets on the sides of the 28-29 windshield frame are different also from 30-31. They don't protrude in as far as 30-31 but you can deal with that later. 28-29 is on left - 30-31 is right
DAMN Vergil...!!!!!!!! EXCELLENT DRAWING...Man I searched EVERWHERE to find something like that...Will be an excellent source when the parts get here....I LOVE YOU MAN.....LOL...
SHIT flthd31...I was hoping you were wrong..LOL...but you are right..DAMN IT ...Well I crawled through the pile of parts and I found a windshield frame that was SUPPOSED to be for me 28/29 Sedan sitting here and guess what..? It turns out to be for a 1930..now I know I didnt mix anything up but at least I wont have to buy a frame...Man..I just ordered and of the replacement rubber and screw sets for a 1930..I hope all through 28/29/30 are the same..I HATE sending items back..
Well crap, according to flthd 31 I am trying to use a 28-29 hinge on my 31. The windshield/hinge came with the car, but the windshield install was so dicked up because of a homemade header, I thought it would work if a proper header was installed. I think I have, per flthd 31, a 31 hinge in some other parts, but I don;t know what my frame is now. I'll search for differences in the 28/29 vs 30/31 frames. Another learning experience here on the HAMB....Thanks
DAMN YOU flthd31..!!!! Curses I say..!!! LOL....same thing here boutlaw...I had a 28/29 sitting here I bought years ago and then bought the 30 coupe only to find out through flthd31's drawing that BOTH were wrong for either car..!! What the hell are the chances of that happening????....but as always..da guys here come through..oh cool.....I here UPS coming....later guys
Just to help clear this up a bit. The frame itself is the same size for 28-29 and 30-31. The difference is the slide on hinge on the top. You can use the 28-29 WS frame on a 30-31 but you'll need to change that hinge. It just slides off. You might be able to carve up that 28-29 hinge and use it but the 30-31 aluminum hinge is only 9.95 at Snyders. The new one will probably need to be trimmed a bit also. And as I stated earlier in the thread, the brackets on the sides of the 28-29 windshield frame are different also from 30-31. They don't protrude in as far as 30-31 and won't line up with your swing arms. But you can also fix that with new brackets from Snyders. So to sum it up, 28-29 windshield is interchangeable with a 30-31 but you need to do a little work with the top hinge and side brackets.
Ok..all the gaskets came in today but something has be stumped....I know theres a gasket that fits in the frame of the windshield but I noticed it only fits on the sides...Theres nothing for it to stay put on the bottom..Its that correct..?
Damn, I wish I wasn't drinking beer when I saw that pic. My comp is a mess and beer through the nose doesn't feel good either. BTW, is the Jack-n-the box dude your dad?
