I installed a set of buick drums on 39 lincoln backing plates and the drum is s****ing the backing plate. Do I machine the lip down on the drum or space it out?
When you are dressing up the brake drum, have them cut a groove to clear the lip of the backing plate. This will help keep the rain out of the inside as well. If your lincoln backing plates are originals, most people remove the ring on the outside of the backing plates. Much easier to detail/chrome the backing plate with it removed.
You need to machine the red inner part and you can also cut the lining down closer to the size of the brake shoes.
Well there can be alot more to this story depending on what spindles and hubs you are using. IF you have alot of thread showing out on the end of the spindle, then I would definitely use a spacer washer behind the inside bearing at the shoulder, it's a better solution to take up some of the space. It also depends on where the brake shoes fit in relation to the drum surface as to whether to space it out or not.
