I'm getting down to the short rows on getting my 40 Ford ready to roll, but today I ran into a snag. I've got a T56 mated to a Cad 500, and I'm using the stock 40 instrument cluster (converted to 12 volt). I just realized today that the T56 is an electronic speedo ****** as opposed to a cable driven one. What is out there that will allow me to connect the T56 to my 1940 speedometer? Thanks for any help.
A friend just finished his 36 coupe, it runs a T700 with electric speedo drive and OEM mechanical Ford speedo head. He bought an adaptor of some sort that converted the pulses into mechanical. Easy to program and works a treat. Literally plug and play. I'll see him tomorrow and ask.
i was reading about this a week back, i was reading a post on a Fbody forum, they were talking about a PDF file that had the measurements to machine a hole in the tailshaft at the correct spot to make a cable work. i however couldnt find the pdf but didnt do some searching, theres also a company that make conversion tail shafts jagswap.com or something along the lines of that only other choice would be the cableX box, which i havent found a bad review yet but id like to know the longevity of the little drive that drives the cable, ya know?
http://www.jagsthatrun.com/Pages/Parts_T56-005_pp6-3_6-4.html Jags that run have a modified extension to suit mechanical (Cable, rather than electronic) http://bowlertransmissions.com/item-details/?iid=70 $550 http://www.atrol.com/order.htm Cable X is $325.00 when ordered direct www.hotrod.com/techarticles/borg_warner_six_speed_transmission_install/index.html It can be done cheaper, nothing is impossible www.ttcautomotive.com
yes jagsthatrun thats what i was looking for, there site is hard to navigate and cant find the price of that kit they talk about for machining the t56
http://www.atrol.com/cablex.htm# Abbot enterprises cable X convertor is a little spendy. We got one for a project but as yet have not had sucess getting it to read consistently. (May be operator error) But they operate with a panel of dip switches to calibrate) In the end we fitted a moon speedo in a cup to look like a rev counter.
Curious about the cable x box if it works when the car is backing up, (reverses spin of motor). Cute little box, probably has a little stepper motor from an old floppy drive! Another possibility would be to find an electronic speedometer and adapt to the original speedo cluster. Biggest issue here is what the ECU does with the VSS output to feed the electronic speedo.
