They prefer a phone call rather than email???Isn't that old school? Imagine, actually wanting to speak to someone on the phone? I'd be nervous too......
Remember when you HAD to call about a car in question....and mail photographs in an envelope? Crazy shit.
I know there tends to be more reason to be suspect of a FNG, because he/she hasn't put any time in on here, but just keep in mind that everyone started at the FNG level at some point. I used to creep on here all the time, but the reason I actually initially joined was to contact a seller in the classifieds. As for the phone preference, when I bought my truck, I preferred phone contact as well. It's easy to sit down and rewrite an email until it's polished and says exactly what you want, but for both parties, (the buyer and seller), unexpected questions over the phone can sometimes trip up a would be scammer. Also, the job I was working when I bought my truck wasn't conducive to email contact, so I had to discuss over the phone. As always though, err on the side of caution. I know I'd rather be safe then sorry. And good luck with the sale!
Paypal is safe and what's wrong with a phone car,,I just sold a car and it included a conversation,,I honestly prefer to talk to someone instead of E-mail.HRP
I don't know about PayPal being the way to go, what if the dude pays thru Pay Pal gets the item and then files a complaint because he doesn't like something ? From my understanding they ( PayPal) pulls the bread right back out from your account ? I'll have to ask my wife about it she knows everything !
I prefer a phone call. I can talk faster than I can type. Hell, I can even talk while wrenching! Paypal for a car is OK, let buyer know upfront you're adding the Paypal % to the cost.
Scammers don't want you to have their phone numbers and to talk to you in person, so that part is good. Paypal is convenient for buying things online, but in a dispute the buyer has the advantage. I take Paypal all the time, but I have to, if you don't feel comfortable with it, just tell your buyer you want a money order. It might not be as easy for them, but I doubt you'll lose a sale that way. None of that raises any red flags for me, I'd say you're OK.
I'm a FNG and just bought parts on the classifieds. I asked the seller for his preferred payment method, and I sent it via overnight delivery. I like to respect the wishes of sellers and give them a level of comfort that they are dealing with a legit and honest buyer. Thats also how I would expect to be treated if I was a seller. By the way, you might want to consider changing the thread title. Doesn't sound like there was a problem at all. Just a thought.
pay pal isnt here for the seller or the buyer..its here for its self..period on another note..a phone call..wow how traditional
I wouldn't worry to much. I have been using that system since I joined. I really don't think anyone that joins wants to be put on the shady seller/buyer list and be band. Hell in the process of the phone call you may even make a friend.
Paypal is not safe for sellers. not one tiny bit. Postal Money orders are the safest. cash them at the post office when you mail your item. they will tell you right there whether they are good or not. I was in the post office once where a lady had $900.00 worth of fake or stolen money orders. lucky for her she did not deposit them in the bank. the clerk caught it, and she did not ship the items. as for the phone call.. nothing wrong with that. in the old days, people used to talk on the phone all the time.
Technology is a double egded sword...it makes things convient and fast, but it takes the personalization aspect out of most things and lends itself for fraudulant activity. Personally, I love the internet for most things (fourms like the hamb, you tube, etc.), however, whenever possible I like to talk to the person I am conducting business with...most of the time it gives me a feel for the person.
I prefer pm or email because of my crazy work schedule but phone calls are cool too. Thats why Ive got my phone number in my sig.
yeah i prefer phone conversation over emails actually prefer face to face over either i just brought home a60 thunderbird convertable a week ago that i got from someone on here the deal went on for almost ayear before we could actually hook up and do it we did pm's emails and phone calls personnel contact is the one thing of manythings these damb computers have taken away from society that the younger generation will never understand (how important it is )
Pay Pal sucks for the seller, besides the 3.8% commission they charge they leave your ass wide open for a I didnt get it in the mail or the stuff is no good scam. They take the money out of your bank account until the dispute is settled??????
My understanding is that Pay Pal only offers buyer protection on an Ebay deal. Anything else you are on your own. It is quick and secure. I am happy when someone wants to talk on the phone. It is quicker and easier than endless emails.
Pay Pal is bad for sellers. Not just the percentage thing, but the ease of which a buyer can get his funds back and leave the seller high and dry. I wont take Pay Pal for anything, even if the buyer wants to pay the percentage. My only gripe with the classifieds is occasionally people asking if I still have something, then after I answer affirmative they never contact me again. What's with that???
PHONE CALLS HERE, but iam just a really nice guy. "AND THE BOWTIE ROLLS ON" but not when iam watching Jerry Springer
Actually for me if I am sellin a car and the interested guy is not interested enough to want to talk to me personally I think he is a flake and Another problem I have is if its for sale PUT A PRICE ON iT hate to see stuff for sale with no price on it the guy must be ashamed of the price
I'm still using my chizel and stone tablets...and crawling out from under my rock... I found a new way to send information carrier pigeon.
Here's an aspect of PayPal that most folks don't understand, or through good fortune have never run into. (And I use PayPal a lot in a different venue. Have for years.) I'll accept PayPal payments for items that are shipped to the buyer. Never, never, never accept it for local pickup! Without online accessible proof of shipping, you have absolutely no recourse against a dishonest buyer. All they have to do is deny getting their item, and as far as PayPal is concerned that's the end of the story. Any other paperwork or agreements don't mean diddly squat.
Talking on the phone is a good deal but remember you are the seller and you make the method of payment .Not open to discussion on that.If a buyer more or less wants to pay his way, then F-him and move on.Don"t get burnt with pay-pal.As said earlier on parts Postal money order is the way to go.P.O. will tell you real quick if its legit before sending parts to scammers.
I've been in parts sales since 1978. It would be nice if all my customers could show up at my door with cash, but that doesn't happen too often anymore. I need to take all forms of payments if I want to make sales. Money orders, Credit Cards, and PayPal. I've been using PayPal since 1998 without any issues. I've learned that honest descriptions of parts and vehicles, and reasonable shipping times eliminate most problems. Now days, most people are reluctant to mail cash or a money order to someone they don't really know anything about. You are always covered if you use a credit card or PayPal for purchases. I would stress communication as the best way to resolve any issues.
i normally include my phone number when responding to a PM about something i'm selling. i just think it makes the buyer feel better to know they wont have a problem getting hold of me. maybe the FNG's also feel better talking on the phone because they dont know US either. they are FNG's after all.
i use my phone number because i get to talk to the person. i tried e-mail once and got a bunch of people wanting to sell my car, or just picture collectors wanting as many pics as i could send and never hearing from them again. as for paying for a car bank to bank money transfer is the next best thing to cash.
Not true. You can file a dispute as a buyer on any transaction. I filed one on a deal where I bought over $200 of items from a guy through his website. He never shipped, or returned any of my emails. I waited until the very last day possible to file the dispute, but my hand was forced. He immediately sent me an email wanting to know "What this is all about!!?" I told him the situation and he made excuses about not reading his emails because of spammers etc....I told him he sure must of read the one from PayPal saying he recieved a payment of over $200, and he read the one about the dispute....He sent the items and kissed my ass a little, but it could have been a bigger deal....but PayPal got it done as soon as the dispute was opened. I could see the same thing working against a seller from a dishonest buyer!!
