I learned when I got to be a "teen" carry a "fishin knife" because it wasn't such an obvious bust as a switchblade, keep a roll of pennies in each pocket just in case you needed a disposable fist pack, and carry a cheap valve stem remover, preferrably the kind that came on the occasional valve stem cap. That way you could get revenge on the "squirrels" and they won't be following you home for a while....

Oh yea, pissing in the cowl vent stinks for a real long time....

There's not much you can do about people driving on a open public road.
    But
You could, when arranging the event with the city powers that be, include the town sheriff and let him know what you would like to see, as in turn a blind eye to the occasional loud or semi-legal old car while being strict book on the tuner cars, and flat tell the tuners when they complain to arrange their own party on a different weekend,
and see what the police view is going to be on that.
If they take a "treat all the outlaws all the same" attitude, then tell the city people you are taking your money elsewhere.

After attending the event I must agree that the drinking there has become a real problem. Saturday night was a disaster with drunken people everywhere causing all sorts of problems. Unfortunatley, not all of them were boy racers and young kids. A lot of hot rodders and event entrants need to take a long hard look at themselves and their behaviour. I went to one house on Saturday afternoon which was full of hot rodders drinking very heavily all of whom were about to go out cruising.

I was down town early saturday evening with my wife in the car and was called a c**t by one rodder because I wouldn't do a skid. I was then abused by some drunken kid for the same reason.

There is now talk of a liquor ban at the event and I for one am all for the idea.

This is a great event and the orgainsers and towns folk including the local police (who are and were at the weekend very leanent, I never saw anyone get ticketed) all put a lot of effort into the weekend, it makes a fair bit of coin for the local businesses and local charities do well from it.
This year there was plans for closed street cruise on Sat night, but between the close of the show on thos same streets and the opening of the cruise too many people had gotten too far out of hand, being of an age where its not that long ago when I was that age I'm still having trouble with the state of the little wan*ers, as my wife put it, she didn't feel safe due to the idiots bot in and out of cars, and I personally saw a vintage fire engine that was crusin with a crowd aboard get hit with a bottle tossed by some dickhead, this only moments before some other little ricer jerk stops outside the place we were staying and does a burnout right next to mine and another of the cars parked outside, due to distance and having the wife and 3 month old to keep an eye on he survived.
I hate to make a call like booze ban but thats whats needed, the police are really supportive of the event and their numbers were too few and the kids too unruley for them to do much with out causing a riot or similar and they handled things pretty well.
I was just suggesting getting the biggest crappiest american cars we can find and invading their next event and making a mess of it....... (like they need the help).

I hate the thought of a booze ban, its as close to a draconian measure as Id want to go, but for the sake of the event I'm willing to do that. Next year Ill have a few at the motel followed by a trip down to watch cruising, Ill duck in and out of the pub for the odd beer. If thats what it comes too.

This is the best definition i've heard of the "IT'S ALL ABOUT ME CLONES". :D

Giving out tickets want do as much damage as you think. If you look on some of the ricer forums, like http://www.streetsourcemag.com/ , these kids consider a ticket a badge of honor. They display them like awards and think they're supposed to drink, break stuff and act stupid to have a good time and impress all their buddies. They don't care what happens.....until someone gets hurt. Then it's too late.

Sport N Woode is right, myself being a WERA/AMA and CCS motorcycle roadracing license holder I have young guys (16 to 20) come in our store with tickets they have got to show me how fast they have been on their bikes.
Think they are worried about their insurance rates? Hell no, who do you think is paying the (as one told me) $510.00 a month insurance (not including bike payment!) on their new Suzuki GSXR1000.........Daddy.
I think the Shifter's have the right idea on the next VLV, I would hate to see that show go away. John

Jeeze thats a cool looking ride next to yours Alfster... ;D

Had some news from the organisers, looks like they have had a total rethink on how to prevent it and they have already come up with fantastic ideas.

(I have copied this straight from their website)

    Here's how it works:

The Beach Hop coincides with the local Rock'n'Roll Club's birthday anniversary. This is always held over the last weekend in April and they apply to the NZ Rock'n'Roll Association for these dates. So we are bound to these dates.

The plan for Beach Hop 2006 is -
    1. ANZAC day is Tuesday 25th.
    2. Many holiday home owners are going to take Monday (24th) off to make a 4 day weekend meaning their houses will not be available for rental.
    3. Beach Hop 06 will start Wednesday 26th and go to Sunday 30th
    4. School starts Wednesday 26th = Beach Hop OUTSIDE school holidays!
    5. Cruise Night Thursday night - we had 280 cars registered last Thursday - would make an awesome cruise night in itself.
    6. Liquor Ban in the Main Street Friday and Saturday nights.
    7. The Main Street closed from 6pm Friday and Saturday nights. Remember, the Beach Hop isn't just a car show. It is a celebration of the 50's and 60's. The cars can get the limelight during the daytime but can be parked up at night to enjoy the other aspects of the festival - the music, bands, dancing etc etc.
    8. We have already raised the idea with the promoters of another event, such as a burnout comp, at another location on the same weekend to give the younger enthusiasts something else to go to.
    9. Whangamata is an ideal spot as it is relatively isolated with 2 roads in. We will encourage the Police to hold checkpoints at Waihi and Kopu from 4pm Friday and Saturday checking rego, wof, licence, drinking and alcohol in the car for minors. This would take minimal Police resources and you can bet the texts would be flying........

We will fix the night time problem!

    Regards

    Noddy & Crew

Yay good for them!!! (and us)

Hey, sorry I didn't catch up with you over the weekend. Yes, that is a cool ride parked next to mine. They tell me the guy even drove it all the way from Wellington for the event. Geez, ya gotta be crazy.

I have read the changes that Noddy and the team have listed and I agree with a lot of them but don't know about closing the main street on Friday and Saturday night. A lot of people don't arrive until Friday night. We parked in the main street mid Friday afternoon and didn't leave until late evening. We never had a drink all night and really enjoyed ourselves. It was good to catch up with friends as they cruised into and around town. I would hate to have that taken away.

The booze is a real problem. I like a beer as much as anyone else but let's face it, a lot of those people drinking in the streets would be driving later in the evening.

I am all for a booze ban next year. If someone can't enjoy the event without having to get on the booze then they have a serious problem.

  16. There's a cruise I know of that had to be moved because of the imports & street racing. It sucks anytime we're given a bad name (as long as we didn't deserve it...). The Imports still cruise there & the hotrodders went to a different location. The only way to keep the fart cars out is to exclude them. If you can, enforce age rules, if not, you might be screwed.

I only met up with him by chance. My nephew was using the car for the weekend and we went down to get a couple of pics for ourselves and he was looking at the car. We got talking and he took a heap of photos. Want's to do a feature. We went for a ride around town and left rubber marks everywhere. Nice to have met up with him.

Here is an easy way to fix the f--- wit problem every event I have entered you get a sticker with your enternt number witch you stick on your windscreen all events are open to cars pre ie 74 talk to cops show them what an enternt sticker looks like and tell them to bust everyone how is f---ing up and cut some slack to the ones who are entered it would keep enternt level hi and f---wits out a win win event that keeps every body safe and happy

My problem with "public" events around here (Dream Cruise...Downriver Cruise) are not so much with the ricers...but Mom driving the family around in the Caravan or Excursion. I understand they are public roads, and if they need to use them to get to the grocery on "cruise" night, that's one thing. But for them to join the cruise and spectate makes me very nervous. I've lost count how many times I've almost been hit by one making a lane change while "oohing and ahhing" over the GTO a few cars in front of me. I just wish the people would park and watch if that is what they're there to do. Otherwise, they should put years of hard work into the car they are driving. That way they would be as conscience of the others as I am. just my 2 cents.

I totally agree. When driving along the highways and even round the streets, the number of people who do seriously dangerous overtaking maneuvers to try and pass me just so they can look or take photos of the car with their camera phones is staggering.

Also people who are at intersections who pull out in front of you to "get a look at the other side of the vehicle" (like its going to be any different on the other side - well maybe it would be if youve been striped by Von-Dutch.. teehee) It amazes me the stupidity sometimes,

I love being eyebaled by jealous types but not so it makes it dangerous for me to be on a road.

Maybe I should get a fibreglass Toyota Corolla body to drape over the bucket whilst driving so I look like I fit in..

    NZ,

Pass out T-shirts to everyone or hang up 100's of posters with humilliating anti-ricer slogans!! I have some suggestions but I won't post 'em here...

Find out where they live/work/hang out/buy parts and post there ahead of time that they are not welcome.
I think you have to ask yourselves what you can do that will make it seriously not fun for them to come and act foolishly.
We used to have some real fun 2-3 day camp out type concert partys back in the 70s-early 80s. Wannabe outlaw bikers (gangs flying colors) ruined all those and they just quit having them

Unfortunately its not just a few, It would number in the 100's if not a couple thousand of them come into town. The event attracts 65000 people over the weekend. ANd all it needs is a couple thousand idiots looking at 100 odd crap japas and the event is ruined..

    Ethnic cleansing maybe?
Just think, in 20 years or so they will be restoring those things and setting beside them in a lawn chair at the Nostalgia run.

Hey you old feller, didn't get to see you on Saturday and the mobile was playing havoc due to lack of coverage or too many 027 users!!!
Saw your car and many others of friends.
was a great day only to be marred by those great unwashed, nuf said.
Seems a new plan is in place which may chamge the minds of a few diehards reckoning on not going next year.
Hope it all works out for the best.
    Cheers,
    Cruisin'
