Stand-by, this is going to get worse I'm afraid.

  3. what should we do??? hmmmm.....let me think.......

    **** IT UP!!!

they could have valued it at 12 grand and when it got smashed by a semi in a parking lot they could have gave you 9 for the write off.

I'll tell you,m***achusetts really ****s,they hate us hotrod guys.I havea 32 roadster ***le,and number,I want to know why that happened. They want proof on how much is in the car, well ****,have the parts were free, even the body was bought 30 years ago.I think we will try to fight it.

  5. so you want to fight to have your car DE-VALUED??

  6. I do not quite understand: does your state tax vehicles based on the ***essed value or the sale price??
If the tax is on the ***essed value, what was the surprise??
If it's on the sale price, you paid what you paid.
In any case, were you expecting to screw the state out of money that your legislators signed into law??
And if you were, are you surprised that the state is smarter than that??

Point is: I know my state's taxation on vehicles. You know your state's taxation, so why do you think you got screwed?? You didn't get screwed, a duece is easily worth $17,000.

I hate to be harsh, but if we know the rules, yet try to sneak a fast one by and get caught out, we should just ante up.

the other one I love is when a guy registers his car for $1900 and then insures it for $19000. that my friends is how our buddy Boyd got caught.

This ***le stuff is a mess. They've been busting balls in CA for guys doing just that. Registering at a lower than actual value to avoid paying taxes.

$900 ****s but you really don't have a choice if you want it to be on the up and up. And like alteredpilot said, you don't want the insurance company sticking that undervalued tax claim in you face if it comes time to collect on a loss.

You just answered your own question. You got a deal on taxes. Stop *****in. I have heard of guys having 6 months of hoops to jump through just to get a car registered. It could be worse, plus it's worth 30 grand like you said. how is 17 unfair. Down here a bike made from s****s of a '75 harley has to be registered as a 2005 custom build paying 2005 bike taxes. don't feel too bad.

They just said that the car is only worth 17,but I also put it on Grundy. We just think that me paying 900 excise tax,****s.The ***le is under my name, and we switched plates from my dads hotrod to mine. But why should I pay more, when I paid less for the parts.

You want to value it at $30,000.00, but they charged you for $17,000.00, and you're pissed because it is more than you spent?

I just wanted to know if this had happened to anyone else, paying more, than what is put in the car.

  19. i understand you not wanting to pay $900 tax on a 73 year old car , but i guess that is the law there...and i ***ume that value was put on by the state, not the insurance company

what the value for sales/registration is and what the value for insurance is two completely different things

in minnesota , sales tax when transfering ***le on a car older than 10 years with regular plates is $10 , but there are some exceptions to that..and cars with street rod, collector , etc plates is $95

you need to call your legislators

The only way to not get screwed if you are building or rebuilding an older pre 72 car is get it appraised and to go to DMV and pay your sales tax BEFORE you even start working on it. They will usually charge you on NADA book price but you can contest it, and they will send somebody to check it and refund some of your money based on actual value. If you wait til you're done the car will be worth book price and they get to keep your money. The other way, at least in RI, is to get a bill of sale from a car dealer. I was told by a DMV employee while she was charging me taxes on triple what I paid for the car "if you buy from a private party we charge book, if you buy from a dealer we charge by the price on bill of sale".

Ok one more thing than I'll shut up about this.I want to know how they can value my car by a book, they didn't even see my car.shouldn't they of wanted to see it.And is it possible, that me being only 24,has something to do with it.I guess I just have alot to learn about owning my own hotrod.

So let me see if I got this right. You're 24, own a '32 roadster and you think you have something to complain about ?

Just think yourself lucky their book is out of date - how many '32 roadsters have you seen for sale for $17k recently ?

  23. Bad spelling and syntax aside, just what the HELL is the story here??

You paid less than WHAT for the car?? Less than $900, or less than $15,000??

What does having a ***le issued in 1997 have to do with anything??

Why would YOUR age have to do with it?? Do you think they have an "Under 25" tax schedule??

The tax is undoubtedly legislated, the book is how they ***ess, it makes mucho sense if you look at it from the other side of the table. Ie: look at every car, subjectively ***ess it's value, argue with the owner, get sued, counter sue, end up in court for three years; OR: Look car up in book; charge tax.
    Think about it.

Now, you are complaining because - ummm, I'm just not getting it.
Is it because you have to pay taxes?? GET USED TO IT!!!
Is it because you think you should pay MORE tax?? Donate next 15 April. There are boxes for that.
Is it because you didn't research what taxes your state charges for vehicle registration?? Maybe research is in your future, instead of a Ford.
Is it because you hoped to cheat the state out of a tax you knew about?? Ask Alphonse Capone about cheating taxes: he didn't get caught on a murder rap, you know.

If it were me at age 24, I'd KILL to JUST pay $900 to have a duece, maybe you're spoiled a wee bit.

Ante up, the next hands comin'....

So they valued it at less than you do yourself. Hmmmm.... But you want them to value it at what you have in it so you can pay less taxes.... ****s to be grown up doesn't it?

Then why are you *****ing about the tax bill?

Ok I'm still confused, WHY THE F#CK ARE YOU *****ING? Step up to adulthood and quit your crying...

You could buy a trailer and just tow it around and save that $900.00.
