I have a 61 new Yorker and I can not figure out how to remove the window crank handles! I have been working on the problem for quite some time now and am almost at the piont where i cut the handles off and replace 1 of them. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Check out this thread but skip the first 10 responses and get down to mine, I have a picture there and a description of how to take them off. Once you see one from the back side it'll make a lot more sense. http://jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=533323&highlight=clip
Square shaft with a spring clip on the handle. Clip also has a square hole and you have to pull it back towards the handle to release the handle. Easiest way to do it is cut out a piece of sheetmetal with a slot the same size as the shaft and use it to push the spring up. Can do it with the regular tool you use for GM springs though. Google or eBay up a picture of a loose handle and it should be pretty apparent.
Thanks for the advice guys. this thing has been driving me nuts!! gonna go out and try it right quick
The clip is replacable and they do pull out of the handle. IF you damage a clip I believe Gary Goers sells new ones in his catalog. I pulled two full sets of this era Mopar Door & Window handles last Saturday from 4 door cars so I will add this tidbit of info. Put your window handle pointing straight down. The release on the clip is now at the 9:00 o'clock position, you only need the clip to push back maybe 1/8 of an inch to release. Some of these if they have never been off can be brutal and a true test of patience
that was a huge help guys . I finally got the 1st handle off. It would be beer time if I weren't on call
