I have been searching but I'm not seeing what I am needing to see. This is what I have:
40 Ford Coupe, with 39 steering.
Question: Will the small block fit with the 39 steering still in place?

Thanks for any help or build galleries you all can provide.

It'll fit BUT.............ya gotta use an old 265 "front dump" exhaust manifold, or a later Chevy pick-up P***ENGER-side manifold (which normally exits from the center TOWARD THE REAR), mounted on the DRIVER-side so it points forward, and around the front of the steering box. DD

    OR, block-hugger headers.

By the way, steering box is the same 37-48. There are column length differences but the box housing and mount are the same.

  4. Also, you will have to modify the front crossmember in the area where the p***enger side motor mount used to sit to clear the fuel pump if you're running a mechanical fuel pump. Either that or you will need to use an electric fuel pump and a block off plate over the opening for the fuel pump.

Here are some shots of mine, used an electric fuel pump, Speedway engine mount, Wilcap ****** adapter, 60's something Chevy righthand truck manifold on the left side. Went in just like a flathead. Have to be somewhat creative routing exhaust.

Then be concerned about over heating, Chevys are good for that. 289/302s run nice and cool. Iceman

a SBC is a natural fit. use block hugger headers or 62-67 Nova fenderwell headers

if Henry Ford had had a small block chevy he would have put it in the forty fords. I HAD ONE IN A FORTY WOODY, THAT TOOK ALL WEEKEND AND AT LEAST TWO CASES OF BEER TO HAVE ON THE ROAD AND CRUISIN. Lasted for a good hundred thousand miles and I rebuilt it and did it again. Stock radiator never a problem overheating with the Chevy but always with the flathead. Sure wish I had that one back.

I think Weedetr still makes exhaust pipes that fit regular center dump rams horn manifolds or block hugger headers.

    I used a pair on a '39 I had years ago.
He's on here... Weedetr or something close to that, but I have CRS right now. :D

They wanted $1200 to fab 1 side.......no thanks...I got it!
    Good Luck with yours!
