dont know the guy but saw it for sale in northern michigan craigs list.very cool looking engine. ceder is about an hour east of the big mac bridge..anybody running a marine hemi in there car???is it possible???
I have a hemi similar to the one in the photo. These are Chrysler factory built marine hemis. As such they do not have the proper crank snout to facilitate an automobile type timing gear and chain. On these motors the crank drives the fuel pump water pump and generator, as well as the cam and marine drive unit from an elaborate gear set up. I do not know if the crank could readily be machined to accept a car type timing chain or not? The motor in the photo has a block off plate where the generator normally mounts. It appears as if someone has modified the flywheel to drive an alternator on this motor. Also on the motor I have there is a fitting on the flywheel to accept a hand crank similar to an early automobile. Imagine the effort required to crank a 331 cu.in. 2x4- 250 h.p. motor by hand! I guess if you were out of battery or had starter problems while on the water you would in deed be inspired! but I still think it would be tough.
Rotation issues can be adressed by installing an automobile cam and distributor gear. Also on marine motors be aware that motors that are cooled with salt water may have advanced rust issues in the water p***ages in the block and heads. Motors that have been ran in fresh water only, or that use a heat exchanger cooling system are mostly in better condition,
