I have been thinking about this for a while now, and the only options that I can think are; 1 they must have a huge stash somewhere, or they rent them..

My dads buddy had a super B the one with the big wing and he rented it out for a spice girls video once but only the owner was to drive it.

Occasionally there are requests posted right here on the HAMB for vehicles. I responded to one a couple of years ago, and my ride was used in a popular music video.

There was a Hollyweird company that made a movie in a town about 20 miles from where I live. They just advertised asking for local car clubs to bring their cars out. No reimbursement. Originally called Fishers of Men they changed the name to "Brother's Keeper." I chose to keep my cars at home.

I think they basically look for more "generic" type hotrods and customs so the vehicle doesn't detract from the "talent". A lowly "prop" that outshines the plot, star, or location, ain't gonna cut it...

  12. The film industry doesn't own anything these days. I worked several years for a couple movie car companies that rented vehicles to the industry. We rented out for everything from print ads to feature films. From cars to cameras - its all rented by the day. It was different years ago when the studios owned everything but now at the end of the day, the production crew goes home and everyone goes their seperate ways. So to answer your question, they usually contact a movie car rental company to seek out what they need and rent it.

I raced with a guy, Rich Manchen, who now works at a shop that builds movie/tv cars to order. Film, TV movies, commercials, etc. I guess it depends on what the production company needs at the time.

They buy them. They bought and destroyed several Novas and Chargers/Challlengers (whatever Chryslers) for the movie Deathproof that was shot in and around here. There is a guy around here who has a busisness of locating cars for the film industry in town. Cars that are not destroyed can be bought, leased, or rented.

Many years ago I remember reading in OCW that a studio or production co. had been advertising for cars. They weren't telling the sellers they'd be destroyed. The write up was done after the fact. The movie I believe was Christine.

I used to race with a guy whose dad sold his wrecker to a production company. They paid top buck then sold it for pennies on the dollar when they were done with it.

I know of a gent in Sparks Nev that has quite a few "actor cars", mostly type 1 Humvee military trucks.

I went to an annual car show that asked if you would be willing to have your car in a movie in the registration paperwork. Never was contacted though. I suppose if there were a local filming of a movie the producers would try to contact the local car clubs etc. to get examples of the local cars.

  21. I got a huge chuckle out of that orkin commercial. Clever.

No reimbursement? I merely moved a car (get the xxx and put it in the driveway over there) some years ago for the filming of a movie in Concord Mass. (Housesitter) and got a check in the mail... the guys who provided the cars surely got paid more.

A '65 Buick Gran Sport convertible I used to have was used in a Jordache jeans print ad maybe 15 years ago. The ad agency had asked around and got a friend of mine who ran a car club and he suggested me. I think I got paid 300-400 dollars and I hung out with them all day. It was a fun experience. They called me again a few months later for another ad, but I was out of town and couldn't make it.

My company just did some work on a OT upcoming production car to be used in a commercial. The vehicle was "handled" by Shelly Ward Enterprises in North Hollywood. From the first phone call I got that "this is a big deal feeling" and the folks were highly professional.

After the call I googled them then had a long conversation with one of their managers. Sounded like they had a huge chunk of the market share. They do everything from car sourcing and prep to full on building and fabrication. They have companion company that builds the filming rigs and mobile cameras.

The car came across the country in a sweet purpose built cabover transporter that almost looked European but wasn't. They were first class and really professional. Their websites are worth a look too IMO. Www.shellywardent.com

My shop has worked on a few dozen movie/music video/tv commercial cars. About half are rented from the owners. The other are owned by a production co. or a holding co. At least in my case. This work is drying up for us, new gov threating to cut tax breaks to the production companys.

  28. ... you mean the Rat Rod? Someone has to say it.

  29. Back in the early eighty's I sold a fairly straight beater to a fellow in Portland who puts any engine that runs in them, bondos up the dents and rust and sells them to studios for that.
