My Chevy project is just getting off the ground. I dropped the frame off to be welded and am working on the front end. I've got the king pin kit. I'm going to order an ECI disc brake kit. Anyone have an opinion on whether I should I go ahead and replace all the drag link and tie rod ball studs with modern tie rod ends? Or order rebuild kits for them?

  2. If that's the build in your avatar, you have one gorgeous car!

If you are looking for a way to switch over to hydraulic, '53 truck (and possibly onther years) front and rear axles bolt in (and give a 3" drop in the front).

Thanks, the picture in my avatar is the Woodie my Dad and I built a few years ago. It's all original mechanically. We built the body from scratch; I did the body work and painting in the back yard. You can see some pictures here: http://public.fotki.com/29woodie/1929_chevrolet_wood/

My new project is going to be another Woodie--but more of a speedsteresque runabout with a more modern drivetrain/brake setup. I've no interest in having a drag racer but something able to drive on the highway (the original 46 horsepower straight 6 isn't happy above 40 mph), steer with some precision and stop from speed without needing an anchor to toss overboard.

  4. Take a look for the thread on "t5 to 1st gen stovebolt"- a fellow HAMBer is mating a T5 to his early 6- I'll be doing the same with my '28 4 banger.

Keep us posted with pics of the build- looking forward to it!

Another option for your front end , I just rebuilt the front of my 31 chevy , I also used the ECI disc kit , I left the ball studs but used model A rod ends and a model A tie rod , they are much much cheaper than the chevy parts. the only difference that I found was the model A tie rod was 43 1/2" long and the chevy was 43 3/4" , and the model A rod ends have a pinch bolt clamp where the chevy doesn`t , I got all new parts from Mac`s for $70.00 + shipping , I believe thats what the filling station charges for one rod end.

I went the disc brake kit and rebuild kit for the tie rod ends. Unfortunately I haven't put them to the test yet since my 32 2dr isn't finished yet. Your avatar pic looks great. Good luck with the new one.

..Or slowly continues. I've gotten the ECI kit installed. I also just picked up a 250/powerglide combo. Can anyone recommend a good repair manual? Everything is apart and unattached, so I'll need some reference. Also, any recommendations for motor mounts? Currently frame is unboxed. I was going to use a universal tube type mount, but it looks like they are made for SBC and so the perches are over 16" apart. The straight 6 is much narrower. Any help appreciated.

It's been pretty slow going but I finally decided on tube-type crossmembers from Ch***is Engineering for both the 250 engine and the nv3500 transmission. I welded them up a few weekends ago. This past weekend I got them in and have both engine and trans mounted. Here's a link to my album: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/album.php?albumid=21677

Next is getting the rear spring perches welded on and a driveshaft....
