Hey. I know there's stacks of threads on this already...I think I've looked at them all.. I think I have a 37-41 axle beam. It has 38 1/2" perch centres, 48 1/2" king pin centres, looks like a 37-41 axle and has 2.30" perch bosses. The bit I'm struggling with is the 2.30" perch bosses. All the stuff I look at on the net says Ford perch bosses are 2" or 2.25" depending on the axle year. Mine's definitley 2.30". The only reference I can find to this is in Tex Smith's ' How to build hot Rod Ch***is' where it states that 'the 37-41 axle is all by itself as they have a 2.30-inch boss....so they need to use a 0.050" shim (to use 37-41 wishbones with 2.25" aftermarket axle). I have no 'bones but obvioulsy don't want to get 2 1/4" ones if they won't fit. Any light anyone can shine on this would be good ...Cheers, Joe
???? Are you using a mic.? to measure. Axles come in either 2" or 2 1/4". If the perch bolts get loose which sometimes happens the wishbone works the axle pad area and can make the fit loose. I have severall of those axles and they all measure the same 2 1/4". I think a quick p*** with a flap wheel on each side and you're golden
You're only talking about a .050" difference. You should be able to accurately grind off or even file .050" stock off to make it perfect.
what tagman said. IF the bones dont fit. most of the time theres some slop, so if they are tight then thats better.
the big question is, how are you wanting to use it ? if you want to use it with a spring on top, that's an odd perch spacing to try and find a spring for. `32 - `36 axles are 36" between perch centers and a ch***is engineering 4" dropped forged is 35" both have new springs available. if you are planing on mounting the spring behind the axle on the wishbones ( like rolling bones style) then you'll have to figure out what spring lenght you need. if you want to use model "A" 2 1/4" wishbones ( because they are easy to come by) milling off .025" off each side ( of the axle) would be easy for anybody with a milling machine.
Thanks for those answers guys. Yeah, machining is no problem...I'd go for machining befor grinding. I was more curious about what the axle was fitted to and why it's 2.3 and not 2.25. Also, how come the book I referred to says 37-41 axles are 2.3 when everything else i read says they are 2.25. Another strange thing..I think SuperBell sell 0.050 shims to use 2.25 axles with the 2.3 wishbones. Solving the engineering bit it easy....I was just hoping someone could tell me what the axle was. I know 0.050 is only small but that's got to be outside manufacturing tolerances...Cheers! Oh, as regards the spring xix32, I was going to go for 1/4 elliptics...(building a modified)
