Gas Guage Hooked up Wrong ??

I have a 13 gallon aluminum custom made gas tank with a ford sending unit in it.
I recently put an aftermarket gauge in my gauge cluster when painting it. It is a new one that is for a Ford sending unit.
Here is the problem.
It works backwards...as when showing full, it is empty..
I thought for sure that I had the wires hooked up properly, but obviously something is screwed up.
If I change the wires on the gauge/tank I get nothing.
As my fingers have arthritis, and my back is bad, it is difficult for me to to get my hand up in behind the dashboard to try to switch the wires around..
Any ideas??
I can get one of my grandchildren to get back there, but they won't know what they are feeling for...
Any help ??
Thanks,
Bob

The sender is grounded and most likely not backward but not for your gauge. There are a lot of senders to pick from.Must match gauge.Ford sender maybe pos ground or gauge.

check what ohms the guage is and the sending unit, they have to be the same, also check sending unit to see if possibly the float arm is connected the wrong way.

i agree.. check the ohms.. i just bought a gauge for my chevy that has a 65 mustang tank.. older fords ohms are 75-10... but newer fords the ohms changed..not sure to what.....maybe you have the wrong gauge for that sending unit.. .. this would change your reading.. the wiring for the gauge is pretty straight forward.. so im sure you have it wired correctly.. might be the sending unit too...

Maybe contact the company you bought the gauge from and ask what sending unit is right for your gauge.

Been there, done that! Your gauge is set up for GM/Chrysler. You either have to change the gauge or change the sending unit in the tank. It will still read accurate, just backwards. I just got used to mine being backwards!

don't switch the wires on the gauge, you will ruin it. try bending the float 180 degrees.

I'm betting that your sender does not match your gauge. I think you will be chasing your tail until you get the correct sender for your gauge.

Appreciate the info Gents...
I know I was very careful to wire the gauge correct, as I put it in the cluster when it was out and painted, then put the cluster back in. I knew it would be a real pain to change if I had it wrong..
I may try the bending 180* trick. Not much to loose if it doesn't work...
Cheers...

Ford reversed their senders at one point. You have the wrong sender. Reversing wires won't help.
Remove sender, and either get the right one, or take it apart and remount the resistor part upside down. That's the only way to fix it.

Turn the tank over, that will fix it.

Check with the gauge mfg. Most of the new ones are universal. Take the back cover off and find the Dip switchs. The mfg. can tell you how to set them to work with your sending unit. Good luck.
