I wanted to adjust my pair o 97's tonite and got my brand new Edelbrock carb syncing tool and put it atop one of the 97's and..........nothing. Hmmm, so I adjust the center turny dealy and choke carb out completely.....nothing. So i rev the **** out of the engine and put the tool on the carb and.......nothing. Now I AM choked. So I look at the tool and of course it says china on it....sooo...I decide to see if I can fix it. I take it apart to see what gives and I find out its a total piece of ****. The areas that are supposed to seal are machined way out of spec, air would leak everywhere, the hole drilled down through the tower is way off center and almost came out because it even pushed out the side of the tower. The hole doesn't match the air channel so of course it wont ever work. I can't believe Edelbrock puts there name on it.

Now, I can't just run and get another...this is Canada and nobody stocks this tool. I gotta wait and mail order one. ****.

Check out California Imports website. http://www.cip1.ca/

They're aircooled VW guys but they're Canadian and they sell a great carb synch.

One of the guys I work with has dual strombergs on his Merc flathead and he bought his synchroniser from Cal Imports and he's really happy with it.

This is the one, we use the edelbrock uni-syn at work and it's no great shakes. This one is way better: http://www.cip1.ca/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=C13-43-5712

    Good luck.

I'm not sure that they still make these but it is the easiest one to use. You can see the red line just below the 8. That is a hinged damper inside. Change the idle speed and watch the damper move. It's as easy as just holding it on top of the carb and adjusting the idle speed screws until they match. I have had one of those other POSs in my tool box for 40 years now. I'd feel guilty if I sold it to someone.

Although I have never owned the one marketed by Edelbrock, I have used uni-syn tools many times. Properly used, the tool is reliable and very sensitive. Based on what you posted it sounds like there is; no airflow through the carb at idle; somewhere air is leaking into the carb or carb gasket; the uini-syn is defective in some way; or you are doing something wrong.

Without too much effort he hose method can get you in the ballpark. It is possible to equal the accuracy of the uni-syn with the hose method, but that requires extreme care and the proper techniques.

I don't know where you are but Mopac in Edmonton stocks the Edelbrock branded one. Mine was a non working POS too but since they were on the other side of town I ran drills thru the holes to clean up casting flash, filed and sanded the swivel joint and elongated the hole to get suction, and re-sealed the top of the tube and it works ok now. Typical garbage.

  11. Anybody near you work on old English stuff, trhe original Uni-Syn' s have tuned millions of SU carbs and work just fine after the basic adjustment.

Sounds like maybe they are now being made in China?

I have one I got from an old british car guy, still had the 1970 sales reciept in the box. Don't think it had ever been used. Works great. Probably not made in China. Don't blame the design.

I always found when using one, that you could hear the difference down to less than one "bar" in the ones with a little gl*** cyl on the side, so found my ear was just as accurate for real world tuning, just a length of hose, hold it in the same position over each carb, go back and forward quite quickly, and you'll hear the difference very easily. the tool may be easier in a way, but isnt really needed.
