Hey, ya'll.. I just bought a '49 Ford Coupe. "Somebody" welded in a Camaro front clip/frame with disk brakes/p steering/suspension system. The guy I bought it from did not know who/where to find whoever did the work. So here's the question. The calipers have the following casting numbers, but as I understand they could apply to a large range of years. (Left) 5474338, 8L, L55, and the (Right) 5474339, 9R, L85. I have attached pictures, too. Thanks in advance for any help in figuring out what year Camaro this is.
L 8 5 date code on the calipers means they were made December 1975. Whether or not they've been replaced...hmmm....not likely since the dates are so close to each other (Dec 5th and Dec 8th). Not likely to find two rebuilt ones from the same car on the same shelf at one parts store.
Hmmmm... well, let me think about that for a minute...................... Oh, yea, I guess when I rebuild everything, it would be reasonable to be able to ask for the correct parts for such things as caliper kits, bearings, bushings, etc. So, I guess the answer to your question might be "YES". Thanks for your help on what it is.
Thankyou '49 Ford Coupe for beating the bushes! I have a camaro front clip that I would like to have grafted onto a '57 Ford p/u and like you want to be able to get the correct parts for rebuilding. The upper control-arms are stamped B21K4R (right-side) and H23K4L (left-side). The power steering gear-box ***embly is stamped 7812145 29J4. I called the Parts-Dept. at the Chevy dealer but they had going home on their minds! Any suggestions for the specific year would be apprectiated.
The 70-72 subframes used smaller bolts in the lower control arm bushings. Other than that there is no physical difference between the subframes from 1970 to 81. Some had beefier sway bars but those interchange to any subframe. Steering boxes also differed in ratio but were all the same physical size with the obivious except of the manual boxes versus the power boxes. Based on the caliper date codes I would agree with Squirrel that you would be safe ***uming it is a subframe of 1975 or later vintage. If you look up the various parts on a parts store site you will see they are the same for the various years. The only issue you will need to determine is replacement springs but that will be based on your motor, stance, and personal preferences as to ride stiffness. Basically bigdav160 is correct in his reply that it really does not matter.
Yes, it does. Control arm bushing sizes changed a couple times over the '70 - '81 run. Spindle bearing size changed somewhere in the mid-70's as well. Shawn
Lower control arm bushings for 70-72 are Part # K6110, 73 and up are K6109. Not a big thing as it is easy to identify which one you have. Front wheel bearings for 70-78 are A2 inner and A6 outer. 79-81 are A3 inner and A6 outer. Again not a bid deal if you just look at the ones you take off you can identify the one you need. Actually the wheel bearing change is due to a brake rotor design change not a spindle change. As you will probably be changing the rotors out you should get the wheel bearings for that specific rotor and you are covered. Other than this the tie rods, ball joints, idler arm, center link, etc are identical for all years. So basically the differences are minor and not anything of any great concern.
