I'm puting new linings on my '40 Ford brake shoes, and just discovered that some of the new linings are shorter than the others (they don't cover the full length of the shoe). Is this normal? If it is, do the "short" linings mount on the top or the bottom of the shoe? Also, where do the shoes with the "short" linings mount on the car (like front shoe on rear brake, etc.)?
The shorter shoe lining goes on the front shoe. I had my shoes lined with the long linings,on both sides, for more braking surface area. Sparky
Thanks for the info. I'm using rivets, not adhesive. I posted a question about adhesives a while back and then looked around and couldn't get any recommendation on what to use. I was going to use both adhesive and rivets, but pretty much everyone told me not to bother with the adhesive. I bought a rivet tool from Macs, but the guy I deal with at NAPA has a machine he uses to reline shoes, so I just gave everything to him. But we were both confused about the linings because the ones we took off were all full length.
I just grabbed the shoe and lining and don't see how the lining can mount in the center. The shoe has five sets of holes, and the lining has four. So it either has to mount at the top of the bottom. If the short lining is for the front brake shoe, I would think it mounts at the top because the wheel drum will rotate top to bottom at the front when the car is moving forward. Maybe I'll just order another set of linings and use full length linings for all 8 shoes.
Yes,I think the shorter lining would go to the top of the front shoe.'40 ford brakes are fixed pivot, and the wheel cylinder(the larger side) would put more pressure there. The small difference from using long shoes on both sides, would be slight, but I wanted all the lining I could fit on them! Good stopping,Sparky
The old Ford brakes are not "self energizing" like Bendix style brakes. I was always told that the long lining went to the front on the old Fords. On Bendix style, the short lining shoe goes to the front. You'd better check in an old Motor's Manual, or ask on one of those old Ford restorer web sites, like the Ford Barn.
I stand corrected, the long shoe goes on the FRONT,on '40's ford brakes. The shoes can be relined at a clutch, and brake shop for trucks(commercial type). Check Yellow pages,or www.com pages.Sparky
I just looked at my new set of shoes and the short lining gets attached at the top of the shoe. Haystack
No. Not without changing over to another style of brakes...as far as I know. Charles Carpenter has 'em for a million dollars a set.
Thanks for the clarification. Not sure where I got the shoes, but the package says "Dale's". Probably bought them from Mac's or Midwest Early Ford as that's where I get most of my stuff.
