I need some help wiring up a 1950 F1 ignition switch. I'm rewiring my buddy's truck with an EZ Wiring harness and I'm trying to figure out how to connect the ignition switch to the wiring. The EZ manual shows a 4 post ignition switch, but the factory F1 ignition switch is only 3 post and I have the push button starter button. The EZ instructions state to connect the wires in the following manner: IGN SW Power wire --> Bat terminal IGN SW Start --> ST terminal IGN SW Acc --> Acc terminal IGN SW Coil & IGN SW IGN --> IGN terminal The back of the factory ignition switch has three terminals labeled: Coil GA RAD AM Help!!!
Not sure on the F1 starter push button, but most Ford push buttons are a grounding type switch. Is yours? and are you using the stock engine and solenoid? If yes; then use this wire:IGN SW Start --> ST terminal to go from push button to S terminal on solenoid. This wire: IGN SW Coil & IGN SW IGN --> IGN terminal , goes to the ign switch terminal marked Coil These 2 I am lost on the letters: GA RAD AM I can look in a old wiring manual in the morning. The manual is for cars, not trucks, but may show those letters. You could test the switch with an ohmmeter to determine which one of those 2 must be the power feed, by finding out which terminal has continuity with the COIL term in the "run" position of the key. I am assuming your key switch has an accessory position?..like to just play a radio with the engine off?
F&J good question on if the starter button is a grounding type switch. I should have mentioned that the truck is converted to 12 V negative ground and the starter button just "connects" the two leads to complete the circuit.
Hi. I just finished wiring my 49-50 F1. If I remember correctly, here is how I wired mine... Ignition Switch: GA RAD = IGN SW Power wire AM = IGN SW Acc Coil = IGN SW Coil & IGN SW IGN & also a wire to one of the starter button posts Starter Button: Post 1: the wire from "Coil" on the Ignition Switch Post 2: IGN SW Start But be careful, if you have switched from 6v positive ground to 12v negative ground you can't use the stock starter button. You need one that has two posts not the stock one that has one post and a ground. Good luck, -Joe
Thanks Joe! I wired my similar to yours with two exceptions; 1) I put the Ign Sw Acc to the GA RAD terminal and 2) put the Ign Sw Pwr to the AM terminal. A guy on the Ford-Trucks website posted a diagram of the original wiring schematic and you can see where the generator wire runs through the Amp gauge-to the circuit breakers-and to the ignition switch (AM). And you can also see where the the wire from the GA RAD post goes over to power the gauges. I'm almost done wiring up the truck, just double checking some of my connections and then we'll find out what happens.
