If you love traditional craftsmanship, how can't you be knocked out by the wooden speedboats of the 50s and 60s. I picture myself and Sophia Loren aboard my Riva motoring to the Monaco Grand Prix: And being a Healey guy, how many of you knew they did boats, too:
old chris crafts are awesome but there are only 2 happy days in the life of a boat owner the day they buy it and the day they sell it
Can't believe there's not more support for this thread!!?? Article on Br'er Fox from Hemmings. Pics from Sonoma/Marin Concours earlier this year. Aluminum racer is Berylla, 1932 powered by 4 cyl Grand Prix engine. Gar Wood. Enjoy, Jim
Holy smokes!!! A 22" dia. 44" pitch prop reaching 45mph at only 800 rpms.......that's awsome!!!!! My Merc does 43mph @ 5600 rpm.......but, I don't think it would twist that monster prop.......
I beg to differ. I've been a happy Chris Craft owner for 20 years now, and have to say it'd be a sad day to see that runabout leaving the driveway behind someone elses car! Brian
Thanks Sawzall, I have loved those old boats since we summered at Lake Okoboji as a kid! Here is a question for the folks that live in lake areas and not a desert like me. I aquired a 1955 Johnson 10hp Seahorse outboard. VERY NICE and runs like a sewing machine. I am the second owner. Do any of you know of a good resource or someone who may be interested in buying this? Engine, original tank and owners manual....................

Great photos and thank you for sharing. If you are ever out and about on a road trip there is a great museum in Gravenhurst, Ontario, Canada that pays tribute to the era of the wooden boat, both pleasure and racers. They have an extraordinary in water boat show in early July each year. The Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, New York is well worth the trip. Beautiful display of restored boats along with some very desirable motors from the glory days of the wooden boat era. Clayton hosts two big shows that I am aware of, one weekend is the race boat regatta that is just simply sensory overload. The sounds of these boats on the water are just incredible. Again thank you for sharing the photos.
Thanks man! Part of me want to build a small wooden boat for this engine but I have too many projects already!
I saved this picture of a gorgeous boat powered by a 59-series Ford motor, was owned by a member on the old MSN Flathead board.
