Ok, I give up. trying to remove the headlight switch out of a dashboard I am changing out. It's an older type-1 position for parking lights, next for headlights, twist for interior lights. I am not sure what it's come out of.

It doesn't seem to pull off like a radio know, won't unscrew, doesn't seem to have a pin or anything holding it together-any help? Thanks.

  2. Should have a release button on the body of the switch to remove the pull knob, then just unscrew the bezel from the front

^^^ I second that. The pull knob has a notch and a pointed tip that incert into the switch housing. The release button will allow you to simply pull it out. Well, ok, you may have to wiggle it, twist it and play with it... But that is the basic opperation.

Like the others said, on the top of teh assembly, the metal part where it is flat there is a pin with a spring (you won't see it, it'll be up inside the dash) push down on the pin and that is what will release the shaft, but! i believe the shaft must be more in than out, so you don't pull it all the way out before pushing the spring loaded pin. And when you push it, it'll feel the same whether it releases the shaft or not.

  7. some old stuff has a release button that's inside the case and has to be depressed with a small screwdriver through a slot in the body

Not stupid at all! In fact I think you are smart to seek information rather than damage an expensive or hard to find part.

Some headlight switches have a small little button that you depress and then you can pull the shaft completely out.
The above photos show this little button.
( it has a small spring holding it in the up postion )

It is just behind the rheostat ring for dimming the dash lights on the
    switch shown.

As stated earlier, the shaft must be pulled all the way out before releasing the spring.
