Vintage shots from days gone by!

There has been some AWESOME stuff on this thread today. But sometimes, one
photo can tell a story by itself. Looks like a '65 Valiant to me. I took it for NON-
survivable. But the more I studied the lightpost imprint in this car, the more I got
to thinking how damn fast this kid must have been going when he lost control.

Just came across a treasure trove of vintage photos of the Lake of the Ozarks area and wanted to share a few. Folks from around Missouri ought to get a kick out of these.

Everything starts at Bagnell Dam...August 29, 1930. The dam was built by Union Electric Company to generate electricity for the region.

 

She's a keeper !!

 

By July 1931 the dam was done and the lake starting to fill.

 

They had to build several bridges over previously flat farmland. All the bridges were "upside down" so cars would have unimpeded views of the lake. Here's the Grand Glaize bridge in 1930.

 

An arial shot of the same bridge. Something to note is how pristine the shoreline is; today almost all of that is filled with houses, marinas and condos!

 

Another shot of the bridge shows how deep the water actually is.

 

Later in 1931 the lake was almost all filled up. These shots are looking south and shows the dam area on the far side wasn't yet so commercialized.

 

Again, the shoreline isn't cheek-to-jowl development! Also note the V-shaped booms they used for several years to keep floating **** from clogging up the turbines.

By the '50s the development rush was on. Note how the south side of the dam area was expanding. The dock in the center of the image was built by Union Electric, but then sold to a couple of guys after a "federal ruling" prevented utility ownership of any water-side properties. Loc-Wood would offer boat excursions, and sea-plane and helicopter rides.

The '60s had ****o development, but nothing like the condo-blast of recent years!

 

Here was some early excursion boat operators.

 

For you early gas station fans. This was in Linn Creek, which wound up under the lake when the dam was built.

 

Jumping forward a decade.

 

Dogpatch was a "family attraction" that was advertised from here to China. Also a DX station! This looks to be '40s.
