l entered a car show recently, now l thought l built a hot-rod like we built in my younger days, the 80's.:D

we tried to make mine somewhat traditional, no skulls, spider-webs or other brick-abrack, just nice clean lines.

well, over 300 vechicles and l won the best r@t rod award.

l took it as not to couse waves and, hey it is an award, it's a really cool show and l want to be welcome there next year, so l was very polite about it.

    THE QUESTION:

has this happened to you, enter one thing and get another different thing than you thought you would?

    Later:cool:

I don't enter car shows. One time I entered the kitchen at a restaurant. I though it was the bathroom.

The other time I got a lap dance from a stripper. I gave her a hundred dollar bill, thinking I was going to get change. I got a bunch more dances.

I was polite about both of these occasions.

To me the general public views any traditional hotrod as a rat rod due to their lack of knowledge/stubborness. Taking my previous 34' pickup to many shows I was told that the ratrod parking was "over there". It got to the point where I either ignored them or on went a lengthy speech on the history of hotrodding. Although I must say that many times a "senior" official of an event would run right over and welcome me to park where ever I wanted.

one way to stop winning rat rod awards is to write on the entry form NOT A RAT ROD, even write it on the window card...

I don't go to shows that have a cl*** for that.

I did however get a club pick award at a show I didnt even enter. My old car was in the parking lot.

The only awards that I have been 'honored' with are for cars that I have built for other people. When they win, I win.
Personally, I don't enter my completely bone stock untouched originals into shows because people think that a 44,000 mile paint faded untouched vehicle is ratrod, and that's not a compliment to anyone who owns and maintains them as untouched originals.
-Hey, some people like customs, I like em with their original paint and with engines that have never been opened. And I certainly don't like to be stuck into categories that don't relate to those hard to find low mileage originals with or without the most faded paint mainly because the shows organizers are too stupid to call it anything more than a ratrod..

As far as shows go, make sure you are entered into the proper category that best suits your build.
Big shows like 'World of Wheels' have specific categories and many times they will place you in a different category based on the shows rulebook. It may be hard to get the organizers to see things your way and get you into your correct category when 'their' rules/terms say otherwise.

I have a "ONE COOL OPEN ROD" plaque from a local mystery run in '93, I was driving a chopped '33 Tudor. They said it's the thought that counts!

Of the 500 units (including all models and variations) of my car, built over a seven year period, I own one of maybe 200 left world wide. I know mine is the only one in Wisconsin. I entered a show in 2002 and received second in both Sports Car and Most Unique. I haven't entered a show since, even when invited.

Last year I entered my 66' original car in a local show. They ***igned cl***es at the gate with no input from owners. They put it in the 70'-79' custom cl***. It was the only car in that cl*** and I didn't even get the award. Sheesh.

The worst thing about it was the judges were auto tech school instructors and department heads. Yikes.

I once won "Best Muscle Car" It was a 54 Chev Truck. The show guy said sorry but I didn't have a Truck award but they all thought it deserved something. It was pretty funny.....couple of pissy muscle car guys.

I've been involved with our local car club putting on shows for a couple decades. All I can say is, please don't take awards too seriously.....

A few years back at one of Godspeed's first blanket runs my brother won best unfinished and a friend of ours won the "best" trophy. We stood there after with the trophies and my brother said, "****, mine is as done as it is going to get" and our buddy replied that his was about half way done. We never have chased awards, just go to have fun.

  25. I was shooting a truck show for a magazine I worked for once. They let me park my OT street racer on the grounds as a guest. It was a nice enough little truck but surely not a show truck just a quick street racer.

TMI, at the awards ceremony I was surpirsed that they called my name and totally shocked when they handed me the award for best "stock" vehicle 1980-1988. There just wan't very much very stock about it, and I hadn't even paid the entry fee. Go figure.

  26. I politely tell them I will enter but am not competeing for any awards. Problem solved. The promoter usually needs the car count so why not help them?

I was at the Chevy/GMC truckin Nationals in Pigeon Forge Tennesee a few years back in my O/T 67' El camino ... Won first place in the Elco cl*** ( it was the only elco there lol ) I got this huge trophy that said " FIRST PLACE CHEVY / GMC TRUCKIN NATIONALS" (nothing about a elco on the trophy)... Boy that sure did help selling it. The guy I was selling it to (who lived 1600 miles away) asked if it was a nice car ..... I said well it did win first place at the Chevy/GMC truckin Nationals... lol

That is one good reason for winning some big, gaudwy, plastic trophy at a show. When you go to sell it you can call it "award winning..." , impress the gold chainers, and get top dollar.

  29. Anyone that is that easily impressed deserves to own a car when I am done with it. Mine are all rode hard and put up wet.

Not really, but I've watched guys do just the OPPOSITE - 'shop' the cl***es till they find one they can get a trophy in. For instance, most open shows - AACA for example - usually have a cl*** JUST for certain popular makes - Camaros, Chevelles, Corvettes, Mustangs, etc. I've seen guys with a car that obviously fits a certain cl*** enter in a different cl*** cause the competion is a little less.

For example a guy with a 69 Camaro putting it in the 'street machine' or 'muscle car' cl*** because there are less cars to compete with.

    All for a $5 trophy.

Actually, I did win a trophy once I didn't think I deserved - had a daily driver 65 Corvette roadster, a little rough around the edges but a twenty footer, red with a white top. Entered it in a little charity local show here. Guy pulls an enclosed trailer up next to me and unloads an immaculate 67 Vette - dark green hardtop, big block, side pipes, numbers matching right down to the correct hose clamps - all the 'important' show car stuff and easily ten times nicer and more desirable than my beater.

Long story short I got the 'best Corvette' award. Why? It was judged by volunteers that weren't necessarily 'car people' and I guess they liked my red convertible better than his green hardtop. That guy was PISSED. I gave the 3 foot tall trophy to my daughter for wiping the car down after we got there.
