I have a hell of a headache after wading through this thread.:p

BUT, it was worthwhile, just to hear and see great ideas and pix from a lot of dedicated MoPar guys about this relatively rare beast. If it were just a 4DS, there wouldn't have BEEN a thread!:D The drive train would already be in the corner awaiting project plans, and the body . . . probably sold outright or parted to the four winds. LOL. But it SHOWS that guys do CARE about this car, for what it is.;)

Doright, I wish I had your "problem." Between the Chrysler and DeSoto fins of '57 and '58, these were THE penultimate and best renderings of the finned era. And as stated, they ain't making any new ones like this.:(

You said two things early on that seem to be your overriding guidelines::confused: (1) It was your dad's car, and (2) you want to sell it, eventually, for max dollar, right? So, lower the front end (torsion bars, as GotGas said) and do a custom -- not too mild BUT nothing too costly to put back original when you go to sell. (Chops are costly to undo, ya know?) Then just put good brakes on, wires, etc., and drive it wherever, until you've had your fun. Then put it back pretty close to original (meaning, like it stands now), and get your MAX bucks -- as you planned.

The 92 is the heart and soul of the NY coupe you have, so pulling it for another project would negate getting the top-dollar you said you wanted. But if you do, I agree with George: Keep the replacement a big-block MoPar -- IMO, preferably Hemi.;) Since 426s don't grow on trees, George's suggestion of a 440 is the next best option. They can make a ton of hp & torque and, besides, if you put a GM or FoMoCo mill in a '57 Chrysler, I (and probably a lot of other HAMBers) will puke. Ugh!:(

(BTW, even a magic wand can't change the fact that this car weighs nearly a thousand pounds more than a '57 Chevy.)

I'd have no problem yanking the 392 and dropping it in a Hot Rod. Drop a 350/350 (etc.) back in it and sell it as a runner (you said you'd like to get some $ back out of it when you eventually sell it).

Not to sound argumentive, but his bottom-line question in Post 1, in his words, was:

"So come on lets here [sic] what you would do with it! how would you build it and what way would you say its more valuable?"

So, to get the most money when selling, the 92 would have to remain in the car.<!-- / message -->

Yesterday I found a Rust free 57 Saratoga 4 door that will provide enough metal to fix my car with the necessary rust repair patches my car needs!
So the Saratoga is now home and I will start going through it today and then start cutting on it soon to fix up my 57 after Im sure where and how much to cut.

If you are worried about resale value and are not into custom cars, you should sell it as it is then buy a car you like. It is worth more now like it is than modified. You would get a bundle for that car as-is.

Heck, you're in PAHRUMP - offer to trade it for an Appaloosa, a restored John Deere and a partially dismantled single-wide.

I'd paint it and leave it alone - those things were quite beautiful in their own right. Dechroming a little bit would be good, if you painted it black and lowered it just a teeny bit.

And how much is a 'bundle'?? The 2009 Collector Car Price Guide says about $3500...I don't have the newest edition but doubt it will change alot.
I do agree with you and many others that if his heart is not into the car it should be set aside, just as he has done for the at least the last three years.

Well see what the Chrysler historical has to say about it first I am going to order the Papers for it this week. In the end I am sure I will just restore it to original.

    Not into it?
I just went out and bought a parts car for it!

    $3500??? some ones on Crack!

So for the sake of argument, let's say that Chrysler Historical comes back and states that your NYer was a "super rare" optioned car with a dual quad 392 ... What do you think that will do to the potential resale value of the car? ... Do you think it will be "worth it" to spend the tens of thousands of dollars it will take to properly restore it? ... If you do, then maybe it's you that should be putting down the crack pipe.

Then again, I'm not in this hobby to worry about recouping my money (or making a "profit") if and when I decide to sell a car ... I just dig old cars ... and really enjoy Restoring/Customizing/Hot-Rodding them. I would get absolutely no pleasure out of seeing one of my cars go across the B-J auction block ... but would get tons of enjoyment out of driving an old car that I built or restored.

At this point I could really care less what any one has to say about the whole subject.
I found what I needed to fix MY car THE WAY I WANT to fix MY car!

Sounds like a good plan. Hope it works out well for you and you're able to do right by the car. Would love to see a build thread on your progress.
