So, I'm temporarily running a unboosted power steering box from a 1987 S-10 on my 54 F-100. 195/75/R14 tires on the front, small block chevy, S10 front suspension. I have a 18-inch 58 Chevy Truck steering wheel I can use. Would this give me enough leverage to make steering fairly easy? I'll eventually swap to a proper ratio manual box, but I need to get the truck back on the road. I won't be any inner city driving or paralell parking either.

It will certainly help... I don't think I've seen a steering wheel larger than 18".

Actully little steering wheels are bad looking anyway beside being poor to steer with,I think.
but steering hard is not always the box's or steering wheels falt.
Front Tires that are to wide or off set wrong for spindle/kingpin,or also too much caster setting can all make hard steering:eek:

I hate tiny steering wheels. Haha. It has some kind've APC ricer wheel dangling on the column right now. It measures at like 12.5 inches across.

I figure atleast the chevy wheel will flow with the truck. I'm so sick of seeing Grant/E-bay Metal Flake Wheels on shit I could throw up.

You're running a power box without the "power" part hooked up?
Gonna be a real bitch to turn, no matter how big the steering wheel is.

Why not just hang a pump on the engine and be done with it?

    OK Ah-nold...

If you install a manual box from an S10(cheap and easy to find) it will be super easy to steer.
I have one in mine, and I can almost turn with 2 fingers when at a stop.

I swear the manual boxes have almost as much assist as the standard ratio Power Boxes (Not the ZQ8/Z28/Trans Am Boxes with tight ratios) with what feels like the same turns lock to lock, not to mention you get a little road feel.

I've just had a hard time finding a box to fit my truck at a reasonable price. Pretty much all the S-10s are scrap or have been used for frame swaps by now. Manual Boxes bring $75 on ebay because every S-10 has seemingly been converted to V8 drag trucks.

the steering box that was originally used with the old truck steering wheel had about 5.5 turns lock to lock.

What are you gonna do about the slop in the control valve?

I hope it's not a 605 box, if it is you're asking for trouble.

yep, add the power assist or change the box - some things can not wait for "some day".
try picknpull.com - they list locations and inventory

Frosty-Spend the coin and get the right box. Then you only have to do it once.
