Gerry burger was the editor of an east coast rod magazine years ago and the got screwed up with the John Dianna jokes. Where is he and what is he doing? Really a good guy.
This looks like his latest effort. http://www.amazon.com/Build-Period-...=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1312088067&sr=1-1
Yep, it is Gary McWhirter that has the red shoes. He now hustles a line of clothing at major rod runs. The line is pretty accurate in that it is called "Old Guys Rule." Gerry Burger is still writing as a free lancer and has had articles in the major magazines. A good guy with a great talent with words and pictures and stories! I think he's now living in the TN-GA area and is painting his 40 Ford pickup. Look for it soon.
He did a shoot on my 33 at the nationals in 1990,editor for Street Rod Builder and was livin in Floridia
The Rodder's Digest's reader's letter pages used to rock! Some of the best humor ever written in the car world. Who can forget "The Mopar *****"? Lunatics should be able to have their voice heard in a puplic forum somewhere these days.... Oh, wait!
My favorite parts of Rodders Digest were reading the FIFTEEN THINGS articles. those were perfect. I loved the sniping back and forth between the editors in the stories. That was probably the greatest magazine out there its too bad buckaroo or primedia killed it.
EVERYBODY has to remember Ms. Ryan. I tracked her down by phone and she had no idea that she was such a celebrity. She doubted me until we sent her a bunch of old mags with her mentioned throughout. She replied with a letter to the editor that got printed but it was long ago. I agree that the humor and snipping about a**** the editors was priceless. One of the best parts was the simple, "you can do it" tips that often included part numbers and/or how to do it in a few words. For the average home builder rodder, Rodder's Digest was the best. They usually featured local cars versus checkbook cars. I sure miss it.
Hey Guys , The last time I talked to Burger ( he came to the house and snapped a few photos of my A pick up for his new book ), he had move down to he Lookout Mnt area of Tennessee / Georgia are and was trying to sell his house in Birchwood TN. Talk to him every now and then but nothing with any regularity, I will see him this weekend in L'ville and will let him know about this thead so he can "post up".
Gerry is now officially in the Lookout Mountain area. Sold his house (and his big shop) in Birchwood. I have a copy of his new book here at the office, and it looks awesome! He put in a lot of hours on it, and the finished product is super nice. Lots of good information, and awesome cars throughout. Wish I had some pictures of his '40 to show everybody...it's looking really good.
Yeah, a lot of "great guys" have gone MIA in the last few years. All you guys that hate advertising and stopped buying magazines can be proud now.
I loved Rodders Digest and his style. i met him several times and bought the gl*** top off his '32 which I still have. Would'nt it be great if he put out an online mag in the same style? I'd pay because the rags out there now are all ads and articles promoting new products. The DIYer and lo-buc guys need a forum like the HAMB that is for ALL car freaks.
Back to the first question: he's a regular in street rodder mag ever since the buckaroo mags went under
