I think i'd like to paint my shoebox ford; a blue color with flattened clear.

If you went this route-- What blue color did you use ?
    Any pics?

P.S I wrote to one dude on HAMB -he did a blue color from KIA with flattened clear coat. Anyone else out there ?

Well this is today guys, the look works for me and the flattened look is "forgiving" --so it's a possible way to go for me.

  6. Exactly why mine is now flattened. I get nothing but compliments on how different the paint looks. I will admit I would really like a shiny paint job, but on these cars with the big flat sides like our shoeboxes you had better have a perfect smooth body or it looks like hell with the ripples from not so perfect bodywork and 60 years of door banging. I don't want to spend another five thousand on getting it perfect. My flattened paint really turned out to look more like a satin finish than flat.
Lots of sanding the shiny paint down and several coats of clear with flatner added and spraying in a paintbooth by someone with experience worked for me. :D

I know they use to be shinny, but how can you argue with a 49 that looks like that??!!! Sweet truck!

    I love the satin look.
Just painted my Sedan with SEM Hot Rod Black and the sheen came out perfect with
    no clear coat.
    So far everyone loves it.

    O/T CAR ALERT!!!!!!
Anyways, here's a 77 Lincoln Mark V I did about 8 years ago. Factory metallic blue with flat clear. The metallic really popped in the sun, and the finish has held up great. We used Dupont products and am doing a 57 Chev truck the same way right now, only in black. The sheen is perfect.....

I guess I'm just to old. Someone will have to explain WHY? anyone would want flat paint instead of shiny. The only way to make flat paint look dumber is to pinstripe it. Opining, Ron

If you are still *****ing about flat paint, look back up at the cars in posts 13 and 14. Those cars look good, period. It's not the chalky flat black rattle can paint job you are picturing in your head.

Somehow I was of the understanding that this is a traditional forum. That said, I can almost understand a flat gray in an attempt to replicate the primered cars from back in the day. Back then, in your heart, you knew the primer was temporary only until you could apply a decent (shiny) paint job. Primer top coat being temporary you'd never letter or pinstripe it. Still opining, Ron

This was taken at the Charlotte Goodguys show last year. I know the owner is a HAMBer but I cant remember his name. Its a really nice flat metallic blue.

  22. If you're using just basecoat add about 25% hardener -this will make it stonechip resistant and some hardeners have UV protection. Also this will help against water marks and make it easier to wash. The hardener can cause the flake to mottle a bit so cross-coat it before it flashes off (dries) so the flake melts in and sits evenly. Matt 2k clear is the best option. you can wash it and also do flake and kustom stuff underneath, and get an even finish. The best paint companies have it ready made with consistency from can to can, DuPont, Standox. Standox is the best.

Now post a pic of the shiny red one that is build just like the flat blue one. No comparison.

As cool as it is, flattened paint is Neo-Traditional. There is a large Neo-Traditional contingent on the HAMB. Very few of us who were at car shows and the drags in the '50-'60s like the flattened look. If you need to hide poor body work, do primer spots until you can make it right. Painting a car that needs body work is dumb.
