I'm going to go with original mechanical brakes for my truck, but I haven't a clue how they work. I have I think the basic parts, but haven't seen how they all hook together. Anyone have photos of mechanical brakes prior to putting their Model A body back on? Any photos in general and any advice? Thanks!
Do you plan on driving it a lot? I see you're in Washington. I ***ume you have hills in Washington. Here's the link to Fordbarn... http://fordbarn.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=3
Do a search on Fordbarn for Flathead Ted, he makes a kit for Model A brakes that greatly improve their stopping power
Properly set up and adjusted, equipped with cast drums and Flathead Ted's floaters, mechanical brakes shouldn't be any worse than pre-1949 Ford hydraulic brakes. But, that's a lot of variables. Be safe and make sure you know what you're doing when you go through them. Ford Barn will be a good place to start, and there are lots of old HAMB posts on this topic, as well as the benefits of upgrading to a 1932 mechanical system if you can find one. -Dave
there can be so much slop in worn bushings and clevis pins that all the pedal travel can be used up before the shoes are applying pressure to the drums. there is a good reason ford put spring steel bumpers on those cars, they aren't just ornaments.
