I have recently bought a 1962 Impala with a 468 BB 780 Holley double pump 11.5,1 compression and it runs on E85. This is my question as of right now its running 10lbs of fuel pressure is this too high ? I would like to run it a bit lower around 7.5 to 8.0 lbs . I am try to get a bit more mileage out of it lol yeah I know I know a 468 isnt a economy engine but I only get about 5 to 6 mpg . Not really sure if fuel pressure would change this or not Im pretty sure it would when Im opening it up :)

I think volume is your problem more so than pressure. Carb and 11.5/1 is your killer, surprised you can run on 85

No more than 6 psi on a Holley.... Even there your taking a chance on ruining the needle an' seat..

  4. Part of your fuel mileage problem is that you are running on E85. It takes more alcohol to run an engine than it does gasoline, so your 850 double pump if your engine is properly tuned is going to be way fatter than it would be for a gasline engine.

A holley carb normally wants about 7.5 psi. If your fuel isn't blowing past the needle you are not running too much pressure. If it is blowing past the needle it is going to cause a fuel consumption problem for sure and you should be running fat as hell because you should be flooding.

That said if your needles are holding at that pressure it is not going to change your fuel economy by lowering the fuel pressure it is still going to take the same amount of fuel to feed it.

My gas powered 468 only got about 10, with a 3:73 what do you think it should get? Buy a wide band O2 set up and start tuning with it.

I was just curious if anyone knew anything about high HP E85 cars . Im taking it to a local speed shop that I use to have to dyno tune they build alot of very high HP E85 cars

  9. I mess with boats running E85...I's mostly turbo stuff. Nobody run E85 n/a
Anything over 11.5-1 n/a gets either av or race fuel.....Blower guys don't seem to like it either. On a turbo deal the power is not all that impressive anyway. When ya get past 1400 hp another 125 hp. is not that big a deal....
Besides...it's on the way out...i think the program lost the government checks Can't buy it here anymore and i can get av and vt at a normal gas station...

And nope, dropping fuel pressure won't help unless fuel is blowing past the needles at idle...and 7 psi is about max..a little more on a domi...

You have a tough combo there...run the 85 which needs to run richer than pump gas anyway......Run pump gas but you are stuck on 91 octane and careful tuning and you might not be able to run enough timing to get decent efficiency out of it....depends on what you want to do with the car...Weekend cruiser i would run pump gas and 850 dp...
It will never be cheap transportation.....

or ditch the car and buy a boat lol...my 11.5-1 427
    2 660's/tunnel ram gets about 2@ 75...runs on 89 or race gas..and will run past 100 @7200
100 in a boat is like 160 in a car and no speed limit

Theres E85 every where around here ( Mn ) theres over 2700 stations selling it in the US and here in Mn theres over 300 . Theres 8 stations within a mile of my home The government hasnt dropped the program yet and it looks like they arent going to . Alot of guys around here have switched to it from AV seeing AV fuel is around 7.99 gal here . I talked to my friend about tuning my 468 and he said its way outa tune I should be getting around 10 mpg so I have an appointment next week to do a full dyno tune on it .

Personally I like E85 the best part is it never heats up I cruised around all day at car craft summer nats acouple weeks ago and I never went over 195 or so . Show me a high hp BB ( 468 w 780hp at the fly) that can creap around rev'in all day in 90 degrees with a **** load of humiidity and never over heat .

The only thing you have to watch for is milky oil if you dont let your engine get to running temp you can create alot of condinsation that wont burn off like in a reg engine so its not good to just start it to ...say ... show off to your friends unless you completely warm it up . Ill be running it untill and if it goes away which I dont think will ever happen seeing most of the auto mans are building cars that run on it the worst thing that could happen is it goes up in cost

  11. You must be in a different world on that end of the map.lol The station where i get my gas swapped the 8-85 pump for 93 octane @ $3.76 a gal.
and heard the price went up to $4.40 a gal. for av at the airport..drive up service....
If you can get 10 out of your rig, that rocks!

As far a keeping hp cool....This little town is in it's own place. Lots of vacation homes for snowbirds and ballers from ca. I bet we have the highest ratio of hot rods per household anywhere in the USA. Ever seen a real GT-40? the La Mans car? There is one in town..road race rubber and no muffs. Muscle cars everywhere..2 superbirds i know of...lots of chop tops Including a 50 merc/blown 440 that i can almost swear i did back in the day...And an ***ortment
    of supercharged cars...daily transportation..with AC...need it when it runs 110-120*..BIG RADIATORS:D

I have a buddy that built a prototype injection...said he would like to set it up on my boat..Hilborn stack injection set up with sequential port injection.
Sets up with o2 sensor till it learns the map and then runs without for boats that run wet exhaust...Said it will work with alcohol too...So E-85 too.
Said it is worth about 175 hp over a tunnel and 2 doms on a 540 bbc.
Be cool and don't get no speeders in that hot rod....i sold all my hot rod bike stuff over tickets....the last one almost got my license 124/55:(
Good thing i had slowed down..i was 160+ when my detector went off hammered the brakes hard enough to haze the tires...cop knew it too.
    Didn't even lock me up....
    mike

A bud hooked me up with this while back.... Old clip of a luv truck i did years ago...I did all the bodywork paint and gl***. It was my bosses truck, he did all the mechanical...Ran 10.0's with muffs...pretty fast for early 80's
Took second place @ street machine nats. pomona...and got 16mpg cruisin whittier blvd.
