I am new to the forum and am hopeful someone can help me... I have a restored 1938 Chevrolet pickup and am experiencing an unusual problem...

The truck will start, run for a few seconds and then die. If I let it sit a while, it will then run a bit longer when I try to start it, then it settles right back into the 'start, run a few seconds and die' routine.

It has a Carter W1 carb and glass top fuel pump. There was a bit of dirt in the sediment bowl, but not what I would consider an unusual amount.

The pump appears to be working as the bowl filled up when I attempted to re start the truck.

Any thoughts on what the issue might be? Also, if it turns out I need to rebuild the carb, can anyone point me to any resources to rebuild a Carter W1?

Thanks in advance for any help!

  2. sounds like a plugged fuel line. is the shut off on the tank open all the way? thet tend to plug right at the shut off.
