persistent brake hose leak

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 1oldschool1, Aug 6, 2011.

  1. hello all,

I've untaken the mod installing power disk brakes on my 1963 ford fairlane 500. I picked up a kit that uses chevy calipers, early mustang rotors/pads. I haven't sourced the hose yet. heres my problem. Ive tried using new copper washers, and checked for obvious defects. and still it persistantly seeps. any suggestions to remedy this?

Are the brake line bolts to long and bottoming out? They sell differant bolts with larger diameter washers made into them.

There was a post earlier about problems with new (Chinese?)copper washers. The OP found that the washers were too hard. He said he warmed them up and quenched them in water which annealed (?) them and they worked good after that.

A lot of the brake line washers were pretty thick (like 1/16" or more), and all you can find at the parts stores these days are thin ones (1/32"). I try to save the thick ones whenever I can to re-use later.

I had same problem on my '62. Finally took banjo bolt down the parts store and bought bubble pack(s) that had assorted washers. Seems mine used a metric size (only two in a pack) so I bought two packs. Problem solved. The wrong ones came with the disk kit. The correct ones fit the shoulder with NO slop.

  6. ^^^That's a handy bit of info, Thanks!!! :)

Some times there is a lip on the brake hose, and washer will sit over that. No matter how hard you tighten it, the washer will sit on top that lip making a gap. Smaller washers should fix it. I second getting a pack of new washers and swapping them around.

Oh, we also had a big problem with reman calipers having screwed up threads in the calipers. They put a coating on them after they sand blast them, and sometimes the threads get messed up. You may not be threading the bolt in far enough due to the messed up threads. Trying running a tap through the caliper threads.
