First off I had a rear wheel cylinder go out. After waiting for my wife to recover from surgery then getting the wrong kit from Oreilly's twice, I capped off the rear breaks. The car is a 50 Styleline with disc conversion up front and it still has the stock master cylinder. I now have much quicker response from the discs, but am not sure about the safety factor. Thanks in advance for any input.

I bought an O/T Chevy truck for the 396 in it. It had the rear brakes disconnected also. I have been driving it for a couple of months now without any scary stopping problems. Safety first though most everyone will advise you not to drive it (or only for a trip to the shop for repair). Guess someone was looking out for my best interest because the cam died on the 396 forcing me to park the truck indefinately.

If you get in a serious accident and they discover that you've dummied-up your rear brakes you may ***ume all blame.

  10. theres only 20% or so braking in the rear. its main job is to keep the car from diving horribly when braking, however what can happen is if you have to hit the brakes hard in a corner, the nose dives and traction can be lost in the back causing a spin...

Seriously, don't do it. Find the right kit before you drive it. It's just asking for trouble.

Why would someone even ask if it's okay to have a system on their car not function? It's not like your byp***ing the heater. and rear brakes aren't there to add peace of mind. The parts to fix your car are readily available. The only time you should even think about doing something like that is if you break down in the middle of nowhere and have to get home. Certainly not just because your too lazy to source the right part.

I was always told the 2 things you never skimp on are brakes and steering.

I just about killed myself and 2 others driving my camaro with just front brakes...
I had to dive on the brakes(front only) at about 60mph, and spun about 4 times, finally ending up about 24 inches from getting the roof ( and our heads) chopped off by the back of a flat bed truck.
if anything rears only are ok, because you can still control it, but you might need a parachute to actually slow down! lol

Well it ****s being broke, but at least I am alive and well. Thank you all for the input. I did something out of frustration and not just cause of the car. The right part will be ordered by the end of the week even if I have to pawn or sell something I treasure less than my car. Thanks again,,,,,

First of all, you should never buy any hard parts at O'reillys.
    You're just asking for trouble...
Like, capping off the rear brakes and driving it.
