When I found my car it had 4 Firestone Deluxe champion tires on the ground all 670x15 which was standard on the original cars.It also had a brand new Sear Allstate in the the trunk with the teets still on the tire indicating it has never been on the ground.I was woundering when was the last time you could by a 670x15 Sears Allstate Bis Belted tire from sears.I am gussing around 1963 to 1964 as radials cam out I am not sure and Sears quite selling tires with their name on them?

    thanks--sp1ke

not sure to be honest more curious about your name it's in black when normally it is red if you are an alliance member. Underneath it says you are an alliance member... kinda weird

i'm not sure about bias, but i'm pretty sure sears "allstate" radials were available at least until 77. Good question, don't have time(well ok, really interest) to pursue further.

I bought 4 beautiful Allstate 15 x 6.70 white walls from a HAMBr about a year ago. Not sure when they made them last but they are very cool tires. I alway like the sidewall design as compared to the piecrust design of the Firestone.

Sears sold bias-ply belted tires at least through the 70s, many other makes, as well.

  8. Allstate tires were good quality tires, made by name-brand tire manufacturers, they just put the Sears/Allstate name on them. At one time, Sears brand radial tires were made by Michelin. Sears even experimented with entire cars, as a fair number of Henry J's were made with the Allstate name on them, same car just a few cosmetic changes and a different name.

Radials really didn't become popular with U.S. manufacturers until after the oil crisis in '73. I remember new cars coming out with radials and what G.M. called "radial-tuned suspension," whatever that meant! This was roughly 1974.

My dad bought a new '73 Impala in September of '73 (as newer '74 models were hitting the showroom floor) and it came with bias ply tires, and had only bias ply tires the whole time we owned it.

Sears discontinued the Allstate brand for merchandise in the mid-70s

Sears primarily sold Allstate tires as the house brand and pretty much their only brand for a lot of years. I think somwhere in the 60's they started handling Michelins as their premium radials and switched over to handling more brands and dropping the Allstate name sometime in the mid 70's when when they started carrying more name brand stuff store wide. Some good Allstate history here http://www.searsarchives.com/brands/allstate.htm

Most guys my dad's age viewed them as top rate tires back in the day.

My Suburban had four Allstate 670 X 15 tires when I bought it in 1976. Ran them for several years before switching over to radials. Never had any problems with them.

Yep, Ward's Riverside tires. I think my brothers 48 Chevy 1 ton still has the set that My grandfather put on it one summer when I was over here for summer vacation and I rode up with him to have them installed. Those tires are probably 50 years old now.

  15. These were on the front of my coupe when I bought it... the guy said he got them new "sometime in the early 70's". They've never even been on the road yet. These don't have Allstate anywhere on them.

  16. I bought a set of g-78/14's from Primerdave here on the HAMB. Brand new, still wrapped in plastic. Not sure how old they actually are, but they looked perfect. I guess they were always stored indoors. I'll post some pics mañana....

i think they switched to the sears guardsmen tires in the early '80's. look for a DOT date code near the bead, DOT started requiring standardized date coding in '71. at least that might give you an idea of how old your spare is.

  18. In the late 70s or early 80s I bought a set of 5 Goodyear Double Eagles
that had been in a service station that closed in 1961. Don't know
how long they'd had them. Eventually the sun and elements got to
them, causing the white sidewalls to check. Otherwise, with what
limited driving I did on them - no problems.

Just don't wanna go too fast and too far on some of these oldies,
    cause they might fall apart.

I have a set of 670-15 Allstates on my Mercury that I bought from Coker in '93. They were closing out an inventory they got from Sears. In the late 80's, Sears was reproducing their Allstate tires from the original tooling and selling them though their stores and catalogs. I guess with the compe***ion and small market, they decided to get out of the old car tire business. It's our loss as the tires are sturdy and good looking, too! :(

The Guardsman and Allstate tires were separate lines and I'd say that the Allstate was available up to at least 1980. I had worked doing alignments in a Sears store and they were still selling them then.

The Dynaply line was a cheesy replacement for the fading Allstate line. I would guess they came out in 1978 or so.

  25. When I joined Sears Management Training Program in 1969 they were still selling bias plies with Guardsman as the bargain line, Sears in the middle and Michelins at the top of the line. This good, better, best philosophy was used throughout the enterprise to allow the sales staff to "trade-up." Employess were offered 5 radials for a new car purchase at a cost of $100 with trade in before Detroit went to radials.

  26. Sometime before 1969 Sears decided to use the Allstate name strictly for insurance which they began selling in the 30's in "booths" near the tire dept. Still today all Allstate sales locations have a "booth code."

I bought a set of wide white Allstates from Sears for my 36 chevy in 1981. Ordered them directly from their catalog. 6.70 x 15's and 7.60 x 15's. Still got the 7.60's on the back of the truck. Mitch.
