I am planning to go to speedweek 2011. As Im sure many of you are. I have a few questions that I cant seem to find answers to. Do you need tickets to get in? Are there pit p***es available? Is there a bus or anything that runs from the city to the salt? Thanks, Bradley
You buy a speedweek p*** as you drive onto the salt. Drive out to race area and park. You need to be ***ociated with a race car to drive into the pit area but you can walk wherever you want.(I suggest a bike to ride). Don't know about a shuttle to the salt from town. One of the hotels may have something.
You pay for you pit p***/ticket at the "end of the road. They have some buses that run to the casinos from Salt Lake You need your Buck Rogers decoder ring to figure it out though. http://www.funbuswendover.com/fun-bus-schedules/ Motel rooms are hard to get unless you want to sit in the lobby on the list for a cancellation at about 4:30 until the rooms are gone. That means it is probably wise to pack a sleeping bag and small dome tent and count on camping at the bend in the road. You will have to figure on catching a ride with someone out to and out on the salt. That shouldn't be hard and then you will have to catch a ride back as the race course is often several miles out from roads end. The truck stop where you head out to the salt has showers for a few bucks and serves pretty good food for a truck stop. There is a shuttle bus in Wendover that will haul you around town and drop you off but I don't think any of them go out to the truck stop. And maybe a Hamber will step up and adapt a young rodder for a few days. If you know when you are going to get to Salt Lake someone might be able to pick you up on the way out to Wendover.
Not sure I understand. If I am out on the salt and maybe around the pits, then I have to buy a p***? If so, how much was it last year?
So all the hotels in Salt Lake are filled up? It should be myself and my dad, he has been itching to get out of here for months. I'd love to stay with someone, I'd be glad to. It's not even confirmed if I am going, as someone offered to pay for the trip, but I dont know how much they mean(car, food, room, etc). Thank you guys for all the info, more is greatly appreciated. I will keep you up to date on my plans. I hope to meet my "hero" Bill Heath if I can make it. Thanks, Bradley
Looks like a little clarumification is needed here.... "City is full" = Wendover, not Salt Lake City. Plenty of rooms in SLC. "Bus from the city to the salt" = Well, there's busses from SLC to Wendover, which is real close. No busses from Wendover to the salt that I know of, but I bet you'd have good luck hitching a ride if you have a HAMB shirt or something. "Pit P***" - No pit p*** needed. You pay to get out on the salt, and that's it. You can walk anywhere; pits, starting line, sidelines, just don't run out on the course. Hope that helps. See you there.
Bradley, also keep in mind your car rental cuz I'm getting the feeling you are flying and renting a car in SLC? Very few, if any, will allow you to take the car out onto the Salt.
You'll need a p*** to enter the Salt Flats. I think its like $20 or $25 for the whole 10 day Speed Week period. You pay the person at the end of the asphalt.
Yes. The cookie monster knows what she's talking about. And don't think you can just hose it off at the car wash either.
The salt gets everywhere. Hard to get everywhere to get it all off. hard for an 18 year old to rent a car anyway. Don't know of any companys who will.
I think it would be impossible to wait more than 5 minutes to hitch a ride out of town (or back) or from the end of the road to the pits or the pits to the starting line. A buddy of mine tried to walk from the pits to the starting line as his daily cons***utional, and five or six groups stopped to see if he wanted a ride.
Thanks guys, RichFox, my dad will probably go with me, you have to be at least 24 to rent a car, and being that he is twice that, shouldn't it en***le him to a second car for free? hahaha
Just so you know ahead of time, out on the salt they frown on people in the back of trucks. If you have your thumb out and empty trucks keep p***ing you by, dont get upset with them. You need to be inside. Some rental cars now come equiped with GPS. If you take the car back and they ask where you were with it, dont lie. They already have your credit card number. They often charge 600 to 1000 bucks extra if you have taken a rental out on the salt. Dont forget the free car show at the casino Friday and Saturday night. It will blow your mind. Have fun.
Hey Bradley maybe Ill see you out on the salt, Ill have Bonni with me. You dont want a room in SLC, its too dang far away. If you cant get a room in Wendover (which you probably wont be able to) Wells is about 50 miles away and you can almost always get a room there. I dont see you guys camping if you are flying in. If you want to talk more about it PM me and I can give you my number and you can call me. Mark
After you THINK you've got it all off, you will still have giant chunks of it fall off your car for months. No idea where it hides, but it sure is good at hiding. Still baffles me.
I always pray for a heavy rain storm on the way home. Just makes it so much easier BUT even after all the rain, sprinklers, etc, some white stuff still falls off later. Don't forget Salt-Away. Pick some up, spray on before you hit the Salt and use as final rinse to get the residue off in the end.
Ok I am renting a car and don't want to drive it on the salt. Can I park by the highway and hitch a ride?
You can park at the "Bend" and ride in. There are some gravelled areas there and at the truck stop at the Bonneville exit you MIGHT be able to park at (definitely do NOT park at the inside elbow of the Bend - that is a truck turnaround and has to be kept clear!).
You can go past the Bend in the Road and park on the shoulder at Land's End. Everyone stops (or slows way down) there to get their p***es checked and getting a ride should be easy. You can buy your p*** there.
To be safe, I would try to find parking at/near the gas station. The Bend is going to be monitored a little more closely this year by the BLM. No camping, and they may h***le you for parking there. Not sure, but just to be safe I'd stick with the gas station.
Re-read the SCTA posting. The bend is OK to camp/park, both north and south of the road. The only place they do not want us is the gravel pad on the south end of the bend.
Man o man, makes me grateful I only live 1-1/2 hours away. I never take it for granted - living in SLC. SAVE THE SALT.
