What happened with the big race, inline 6 vs. V8? Did I miss the outcome or are they still tuuuuuuuuuuunnnnnning?
What does everyone think about straight six rods overall? I have a 223 that runs, and possibly access to an old '31 Chevy truck. Would a fenderless, chopped and channeled dual-carb straight six truck be worth doing? -Dean
I love the look of a straight 6 in an open hooded rod. Probably because its not the cookie cutter solution. I have seen some really tear it up!
YEAH ive been waiting for the results on this race toooooooooo! wanna see (or hear or see pics) of the Henry Flatmotor & the six in a row gettin it on!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The race is between me and Flatshoebox. We were going to race at VIVA but his clutch went out. He has all the parts to put it back together but hes too lazy/scared to do it. actually hes waiting for me to put a new trans and clutch in it for him. Im sure he has something to say about it.
Put the clutch in there for him, then he has no excuse? I am curious as to the outcome of the race. I just used a G-tech meter on my blown slant and it says I turned a 13.48 in the 1/4.
Thats what were waiting for and i dont really have much spare time to do it. i thinka g-tech would read something like 19.46 for my car.....
Overall, I think they are great! I'm doing an inline six-powered RPU and although I've opted for the 292 C.I. Chevy truck motor, lots of the older in-line sixes are cool too. I usually keep a pretty close eye on inline parts at the swaps and on line. In general, engine prices seem to be a bit less than most of the V-8 stuff (I picked up a non-runner for $150 - and just recently located a complete running motor for only $200). I know some of the old Jimmys and such can fetch a pretty penny (say with a Wayne 12-port head conversion), but prices for the early straight sixes, and speed parts (intakes, etc) seem to be in line with vintage SBC stuff - and generally less than Olds and Buick items. In my case, all the clutch, bellhousing, and tranny stuff is the same as on the V-8s, so that's a money saver. If you pay attention to the natural characteristics of the inlines (a bit slower throttle response, less maximum RPM potential - but excellent torque due to the long stroke), and make proper selections for gearing, I believe there's plenty to like about them. And hey, there's always the "something different" factor. My first car was a '50 Chevy with a 235 C.I. six, and I really got hooked on sixes in the late '60s whenI had a friend who drag raced a straight six-powered altered roadster. Believe me, it kicked serious ass! Admittedly, that was a "full-out" race motor, but the potential for good performance is there with many sixes (not just GMs), albiet on a more modest scale. One small drawback - as far as hot rods - might be the additonal length of the block. If you're building a small car (lakes mod, etc.), you'll have to deal with that extra length, but lots of people have done that successfully. There are a couple really good books available regarding inline engine mods (at least for GM motors). I don't recall the titles for the old stuff, but if you choose a 292 (the most practical choice for a true performance build), check out the "Chevrolet Inline Six Cylinder Power Manual" but Leo Santucci. It's just amazing. If you're looking for a motor or parts, be sure to check out the classifieds at Stovebolt.com. There are always engines available there, and performance stuff too. Bottom line? I say go for it.
Scared and lazy, huh!! I got bored waiting for you to tune your shit and moved on!!!.. Oh, and I'm making you put my clutch in, young'n !! Besides you have a lift and I have a sloped driveway!... GFY

"I missed 2nd gear!" Ok, now we've heard the excuses. I wanna see the money where the mouth is and "Let's get it on!" Yes, we've been hyped up on this...
I say do it!! I am a inline fanatic. I built a 53 Pontiac with an inline OHC six from a 67 Firebird and now I am building a wilder version of that same motor for in my Model A sedan project. Chopped Channelled, fenderless, with a inline sportin five 2bbl carbs all in a row, so I am all about the inline powered hotrods.
I never thought about it before but the term "Bench Racin" really applies to this bit of balogna. I agree if you can't get it out of the driveway the race is all conjecture and blowin' smoke. This post started 'bout 2 months ago and the 1/4 mile elapsed times have exceeded seconds and gone into days! Let's see, 1/4 mile in 64 days (that ought to be the record for "Slow Drags"
Come on boys, if we keep agging it on, maybe we can motivate them. Ah, never mind, they's too chicken...... yes, mine's in pcs.........where's my money where my mouth is?
