History When did window tint film first come around?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Richard D, Aug 9, 2011.

  1. When I first got my Merc,I was gonna tint them black with just white eyeballs, like in the old Cartoons.....Glad I didn't,haha!
Not a big fan of tinted glass,of any kind, old old cars. Blue, green, red, etc,on Gassers or Drag cars is okay though...HATE seeing it on Hotrods!!!!!

  2. Actually even though it would lack a certain period quality the Riv would look good with dark glass in my opinion. One of the things that tinting does for a car and part of the reason it became popular is that is gives the illusion of a lower lid. The riv already has a low looking lid and it should accent the look.

That said fix the AC first and see if you want to take the plunge. That is what I would do.

    Squirrel,
I bought rose colored spray on window tint from JC Whittney in '68 to tint the glass in my first car. I bought it because the ol' man had done the windows in the old plymouth coupe that way when I was little, he said that it was like looking at the world through rose colored glasses.

The Plymouth and the roadster are the first cars that I really remember. Back then it wasn't spray on it came in a bottle and you sort of poured it down the glass.

I'm not a fan of "dark" tint on old cars but they do make some light shades with 98% UV protectant that will protect your interior and keep the heat out. As far as the first tints, I think it was the spray on crap that you couldnt see through and cracked out the first time the weather changed

Harmsway proved the history of it, that it was done back in the day.
yet just because people dont like it, they speak like it shouldnt be done.

    hmm.

It could depend on your attitude. You never know.

  13. I used that in 1970, and it was for tinting car glass, not models. It worked amazingly well as you chased the run onto newspaper taped to the bottom of the glass. I was 15 yrs old and just wanted to do "something" to my first car that I could actually afford. That led me to some fairly bad decisions.

I use Windex on my glass. It ain't what it used to be.... Doesn't seem to work for shit anymore.

Have they changed it in the last few years? (That is, have the nanny state made them make it "safer"?)

3m holds the original patent for the window film, since '66. I like the look either way they both have thier advantages..... I just think hot rods look better without.

Window tint film may not be pre '64, but many old pre '64 gassers used plexiglass that was colored, so people looking to build a period car often use window tint film in yellow, red, blue, etc. to get the look of old plexiglass on their gasser builds.
So based on that, the tint can be period correct to achieve a period look with glass.
