Would it be possible to use a Grey Marine Buick 401 for automotive use? What timing chain cover did they use?
I have only seen two pictures of the short block on an engine stand but the guy says he has everything from the marine conversion.

I can't tell with intimate knowledge of this application......BUT, generally the marine applications of automotive engines utilize stock blocks and cranks. Most often the earlier inboard applications, such as I think you are asking about, drove off the "front" of the engine, unlike the later style I/O apps.

At worst, you may have to retrofit the timing cover as you have asked about. You also will want to check on the rotation of the engine. Usually single engine boats used standard rotation and twins used one standard and one counter rotating.

To my knowledge, the counter rotating models require a camshaft/distributor and starter change. Also, the manifolds in marine apps typically used "wet" manifolds which are big boxy things totally unsuited to automotive use. So, sourcing either stock p***enger car manifolds or headers will likely be necessary.

Thankyou both for your replies. The guy selling did say the front of the engine was the drive and that the engine had never been run, only ever used for set up.
    Regards Paul.
