WOW! I never knew I didn't care about so much and by the way,it's motor or engine.

 

Yeah. The Motor - Engine thing is a real "who cares" as far as I am concerned. But different people have different thing that just grate on them. Until I started reading the HAMB I never heard of anyone calling a Belly or Drop tank a "Tanker" That just digs into me like finger nails on a blackboard. I hate it. Pretty harmless thing to elicit such a reaction. But it does just the same. Please stop.

 

GM rearends referred to as 10 volt or 12 volt????

YES! The word "Classic" to me means a 1932 V-12 Packard or a V16 Cadillac!

If I see the word "stunning" in a car ad I don't even bother to read further as I know the seller is full of BS.

I just got done shopping for my bucket and that was in 5 out of 6 ads. To add to the list:

I hate it when people write "add" when they mean the shorthand of the word "advertisement"

Add means you are using addition, ad means advertisement.

 

Rims are the rims..... steel/aluminum part
Tire is the rubber part
and wheel is for when the two are combined

 

You need to git you some bomb-ass rims for yo whip, dawg!

And YES - engine! That's a tough one, tho, bc it's so engrained in the carguy speak...I say engine all the time and feel foolish calling it a motor. Dad drilled that into me. "A motor is electric, you're gonna need an awful long extension cord!"

To finally get involved in this engine/motor debate... I wasn't raised with a dad/shop teacher who taught me the differences, I grew up interchanging the words. As others have posted, this was because of GM, FoMoCo, AMC, etc.

But my question is this. If there seems to be an entire generation (or more) that were taught that a motor is electric, then how come you hear lots of older guys around the drag strip saying things like "its all motor" when referring to their cars ET?

 

People often ask, "Are you going to restore it?" "No Way!!" is my response, "Thats not a good idea." Its a modified, improved HotRod version of a Model A

 

General Motors, American Motors, Ford Motor Company, Motorcycle,,Gee they are all wrong!!! Ha,Ha,Ha!

Looking at a 58 Caddy a while back-seller tells me "I think the engine has been rebuilt, but I don't have any proof" as you look at the Krylon paint job on the engine, all over the hoses, wires, exhaust manifolds etc.
Not sure, but I don't think that one had ever been apart.

 

I was just recently looking at an O/T '69 Olds Cutlass that said it had a 455 hard block.

Huh... would like to see a soft block to compair it to.

Rims = slang word for wheels - OR - the outer circle of a wheel, attached to the hub by spokes.

Wheels = steel, mags, aluminum. A circular frame or disk arranged to revolve on an axis, as on vehicles.

Tires = rubber radials or biasplys. A ring or band of rubber, either solid or hollow and inflated, or of metal, placed over the rim of a wheel to provide traction, resistance to wear, or other desirable properties.

Theres no word that describes the wheel/tire combo that Im aware of.

Anyone care to correct me?

Probably the most common word mis-use on vehicle sites of all genre is the use of BREAK when what's really meant is BRAKE, ...been seeing that one almost daily for years now, aargh.

Another is the use of "traditional" to describe ratrods [& I'm not inferring that I necessarily dislike ratrods altogether, because I don't], ...when you're much closer to 70yrs than 17yrs it's at best a hoot when one of the young guns wants to tell you how it was "back in the day"!

 

Spelling nazi's! They iritate the hell out of me. This is The HAMB, not a spelling class.... you Harvard graduate you!

When cars are advertised on Ebay with "no reserve" but the starting bid is somewhere above $0.00. usually in the '000's. Wouldn't that be a reserve?
