I will stand by my comment about Early Nailheads sucking. Parts are not easy to get. Nobody has a real good info on them. This might work or maybe that will. I know what's what with a SBC.

I am going to run an electric fuel pump on the car cause I know I'll never be able to find a fuelpump on the road. See I build drivers. I want to be able to drive it cross country and not need a trunk full of parts. You guys knock the sbc but how many of you drive and I mean really drive your cars with the off the wall motors?

How many of you guys that praise the nailhead have early ones??

Brad and Fraz... great info Thanks!

Mazdaslam...the free motor and the cheap intake have cost me well over a thousand and I haven't even started to rebuild that motor. It's gonna cost a couple thousand for that. Should I thank you or what??? Yeh!! :D

Nappy...If I show you my 322 nailhead will you show me Angelina's boobs??? :D

Yeh....I think I should take up watching home improvement. The old episodes when Pam Anderson looked her best! I'm just a little stressed. I've got 8 days to get this thing done and it would take most people a year to get done what I have to do yet.

Whell, I just came over from the "Buick Board". Let's see if I can help ya out, you seem like such a well mannered, nice and patient guy and all.... So what kinda "piece a shit " did the " I think it's a 264 come out of? If it was a 54/55 Special (series40), pretty good chance you gotcha a little 264. If so it should have a suffix number 4 on the engine pad (right side center of engine just below them beautiful upright valve covers). It will also have a 3/8 in wide by 1/8 in deep vertical groove cast into the serial pad 1 1/4 inch to the rear of the pad centerline. And of course all the little motor needed was a lil 2 barrel carburator (probably a Stromberg but maybe Carter) . And yes it will have cast iron fan drive pulley on the crankshaft instead of a harmonic balancer like the Century (series 60) Super (series 50) and the Roadmaster (series 70). Now if this little 264 came out of a straight stick Syncromesh car, then it'll have a cast iron flywheel for clutch application. Dynaflows had a steel flywheel for torque converter application. Either way the 1954 and I'm 99.99% sure the 1955 Special Series 40 flywheel is not interchangeable with the Century (series 60) Super-(series 50) and the Roadmaster (series70). Want to know how to identify the series 40 flywheell from the 50,60 and 70? Come over to the (Buick Board) and I'll tell ya.

Just kiddin, Clark.:D The flywheel for series 50, 60 and 70 have two balance holes approximately 1 1/8 inch diamater, located adjacent to one of the converter drain plug access holes, whist the series 40 has approximately 3/4 inch diameter holes in the same place. And oh yea, all series 40 flywheels are stamped 3.6 on the rear (transmission side) face.

If you still aren't sure and want to start pullin the engine apart, then the 40 series cylinder bore is about .40 larger on the 50,60 and 70 and the piston tops will be different given what series it is and if it came out of a stick shift of Dynaslow. (pun intended). and oh yea all 40 series engines have cylinder head gaskets only .015" thick. And if you keep pullin engine parts, you'll find that the ser 40 cam shaft will have a groove just forward of the number 3 bearing journal and the others wil have a smooth surface.
Hope this helps. I'd hate to see you give up on that nelhead before you get a chance to see how strong and tuff it is.

There are several good "Buick Boards". My personal favorite is

    http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?Cat=

Scroll down to the BCA site. There are a lot of other makes of auto sites here also. If anybody has questions we old nailheader's can help with don't hesitate to post. There are some guys there that use to work in the Flint plant testing the old straight eights and nailheads. Stop in and say hello. BTW I'm MrEarl

Note the "org" at the end. that's the Buick Club of America's website where Roadmasters got his info. (I'll be printing that out and adding it all to my ringbinder of Nailhead info)

One question about the "flywheel" i.d. info:
when you say "flywheel" are you actually meaning "flexplate"? One thing that bugs me about the original Buick designation (and it's still used by enthusiasts on the BCA) is that they refer to the flexplate as flywheel.
In normal car-guy speak, a flywheel is the big heavy steel disc used with a clutch--it's the part that the clutch engages, and the big ring gear for the starter is on it.
A flexplate is what the torque converter on an auto trans bolts to--this also carries the starter ring gear.
    To simplify
    Flywheel: Manual trans/clutch;
    Flexplate: Auto trans

Clark, I know it's not gonna help by next weekend, but the lady I rent my barn off of has a Buick Super 88 sitting in one of the other barns. I know she's thinking of getting it out of the way (there's a long story behind it), so I was gonna see if I could get it. If I can we can cannabalize the engine parts out of for what you need and whats good.

  12. Dont be such a lil girl :p stick with the nailer... cause man, you think you got it bad, i cant get shit for a buick over here...i have to order evything online..mainly using Ken at Buick Bonery 916-381-5271, which has got me roling again eveytime.. he aint stupid with prices either..
