Can a car with T5 ****** be Dolly towed on rear wheels in neutral for @ 100 miles safely?. Is DS removal necessary?, I know there's an oiler on the tail shaft ?. I'd like to take recent '61 project to track test&tune but would prefer starting fresh rather than after driving traffic and distance. Thanks
The oiler is 5th gear spinning with the tailshaft, don't know if it will keep the rest of the gears on the mainshaft that won't be moving lubbed enough, might not need much lube as they [WC] have needle bearings..When in doubt, to be safe I would unbolt the driveshaft from the rear end leaving it in the trans....tape the u-joint to keep it together, use a couple bungee cords to tie it up or to the side some...
I thought you put 5th gear in it so you could drive it? Sorry I can't be more help, 100 miles is kind of when you'd start having problems if it doesn't get enough oil to the bearing between the main drive gear and mainshaft, or between a gear and the mainshaft if it's not raining too bad I'm planning on driving my turd up to the strip in Tucson, about 60 miles or so each way. And I don't even have 4th gear, let alone 5th.
""I thought you put 5th gear in it so you could drive it? "" That was my first thought.. He's nervous with a new build, I can understand that..We [me included] used to find a local out of the way spot for some thrashing [er, finding problems] before driving to the digs; as we also had to drive home..I had to drive home twice with a broken axle, my saving grace was I was using a Detroit Locker.....
Disconnect the drive shaft. With the front on the dolly the trans will be tilted and you will starve the input shaft to output shaft needle bearings. This will result in a gauled output shaft and be destroyed. $300 for a new one.
Yea what puddin head said... won't take long to drop it off the pinion. strap it to the frame and take off!
