I left Dale's Monday night, and the thrash continued! I hadn't been home for 5 weeks, so I needed to get home for a bit. I'm going to lay low at Speedweek, and save myself for WOS. I'll be at Speedweek for the opening weekend, then home home for some family time.

There was definitely some drama, with the clutch fork, driveline, rear end, and redo's, but progress was quick and neat. Swapping the FlatCad in will be fairly straight forward, and painless.

Unfortunately, we didn't get the bellypan on, or the car on scales. Licensing runs won't be fast enough to matter, but we will get these done before WOS!

Dale and Amy- Thanks for opening up your house and shop for us to complete this! You both are exceptional people and hosts, and the stay was great!

Mark and Chris- without Mark's incredible eagle eye, and Chris's attention to design detail, we wouldn't be headed to the salt. Thanks guys!

Pete- thanks man! You're engine is in the car- see you this weekend!

Everyone has been very helpful, and free with advice- Thanks! I sure hope to meet as many of you as I can.

If you get some free time at B'ville, give me a shout!

Damn you guys do good and fast work! Hope to see it run in 3 or 4 days

  6. FlatCad Columbus Crew - Hitting the Road!

Another long day - everything just takes longer than one thinks! We had a bunch of stuff to complete on the car - still have a few loose end that we'll tie up in Utah.

We also had some big hurdles to overcome -- but we got through them as always. On a newly constructed car - with many different "builders" along the way, there are just a lot of things to check, validate, change a bit - whatever it takes. It is always a lot more work than you think - takes 2 - 3 times longer and at least twice as much money as we estimate . . . just the way it is.

    Her Maiden Voyage!

Took the car down the long driveway - felt pretty good and she wanted to get up and go . . . engine sounds nice. Probably the first time in many decades that this car has actually moved under it's own power - wish it could talk to me.

I am an optimist - thought we'd leave around 12:00 . . . just didn't know it was at night and not at noon! We need to hit the road and chew up some pavement. We have three of us in my truck, so we can share the driving load a bit.

Anyway, thanks for all your support getting here . . . for the support that we'll need going forward and for tuning in to the same "Flat Channel".

See you on the salt boys and girls!

Last photos in Columbus - before the load:

    Haha!

Dale, Chris, and Mark drove straight through from Ohio, and I joined them In Cheyyene WYo. We made the salt at 10:00 A.M. this morning.

We didn't have the car finished, and had to make a decision- stay home and work on it, or finish it on the salt. We spent the day thrashing on the car, and will take it to tech in the morning.

Rich Fox was here, and Pops29 joined us with his boys and friends, and were a great help! Tman stoppes in, and McTim64 offered lots of helpful advice.Roseville Carl will be up here tomorrow, as will Sam. Pete1 was here- the last pic is him tidying up the wiring.

I promise lots more pics tomorrow-Here is today's thrash!

Thanks for all the support, guys!

Yep, I transposed the numbers when I registered the car!

Drilled- Great pic Boss! You caught me doing what I do best-leaning on the car!

We thrashed all day, and finally got in line for tech. We should tech first thing in the morning, and get a rookie run in tomorrow afternnon, weather permitting. There is a 40% chance of rain tonight, but we ain't scared!

    even with plan B,
it was one helluva schedule to watch you all go through.

Have fun and hope your balls don't get sunburned!

    Lol! I changed the date!

    Thanks Guys!

Met some more cool guys today- Elmo Rudge, Freud, Ray the Rat,Big Tim, and Sparky. Stan Back and Rich Fox were there to TRY and keep us on the right course!

We got right through tech, and went to the rookie course. Of course, we had some rookie mistakes- one driver went past the 3 mile under power, and another lost the door net rod on the return road. I got extremely hot when I was second in line, and bailed out of the car, saying **** this!

After I got cooled down, and received some advice from an angel( Jeanelle?) on the Hudson Boys team, I got through the rookie run.

At the end of the day, Dale and I got our rookie runs done, and Pete and Chris will do theirs when it dries out.

I have to say, it seems surreal being here, a****st all the history, and experienced racers!
A few shots from the Rookie line- That's Pete1 getting strapped in!

OK, excuse my stupidity, but wouldn't the car be more aerodynamic with front fenders? Or was the plan all along not to run them. My shirt says different.

When Buddy has time, I think he will answer your question. Some unusual things are done at Bonneville that do not seem to make sense. It is sometimes because of the rules and sometimes because of what works on the salt at speed. I had to readjust my thoughts on many things when working on Hooley's Studebaker.
