Anyone know the wrist pin size on a `55/`56 Packard V8? I ended up with 3 sets of custom JE forged pistons, and have a hunch that they might fit Packard.
One of my Federal Mogul catalogs has the following information: 352 Engine- 4" bore 2.0078 compression distance and a .9804 dia x 3.250 long wrist pin 289 Engine- 3.562 bore 1.594 compression distance and a .8744 dia 3.250 long wrist pin Clipper & Super Deluxe engines- 3.8125 bore x 2.0078 compression distance and a .9804 dia x 3.250 long wrist pin
If you measure the compression distance and the bore size perhaps the application(s) can be backed into. I have never done machine work on a Packard so I have no idea what the pistons looked like, were they slipper skirt pistons which allows the piston run close to the crankshaft counterweights? As I have a pretty good archive of engine part books going back into the mis 1950's I can back into applications with bore, compression distance and pin size, let me know if you need more information...I love the smell & feel of 50 year old catalogs.
Bore sizes are 4.030,4.060,and 4.155. Compression distance is 2.074,2.080 and 2.080. All three sets have .990 for the pin size. They are all flat-tops,no reliefs.
The 289 isn't a Packard engine per se, it's a Studebaker. The smaller 320 is A packard and it was installed in Hudson, it's the same block as the 352 and 374 but with a smaller bore.
Packard pins are .9804. Big block Chevy, Lotus 907, and early GMC Sixes (270-302) are .990. Since my Packard rods would have to have been re bushed I honed them and the pistons to .990 and used new BBC pins.
What kinda Packard you have RichFox? i have several, and am always looking for more Packard parts/info/people
b-t-w for those who didn't know the Packard 352 is a 4" bore, and the 374 is a 4.125" bore. the 320 is the baby Packard for 55 clipper delux and super models. Also the nash and hudsons. 352's for 55 custom clippers and sr. cars, and all 56 clippers. 374 is 56 sr only. the 289 is 57-58 models which are rebadged Studes with a few real Packard parts tossed on here and there.
