I have a question for the Ford guys about their rearends. Uh well, I mean about the 9 inch to be specific. (Man I'm walking a fine line tonight) Anyway, I found a Ford pickup bed trailer that appears to be from a mid sixties and 1/2 ton. It has "Custom" script on the side and I was wondering what the chances of this rearend being a posi might be. I pulled the tag off and I have it in white vineger right now soaking because the rust has done a number on it and I could hardly make out the code. Maybe in a couple hours, or even tomorrow, I'll be able to read it. Oh, can anyone steer me to the website that has the codes listed? I used to have it and now I can't find it. If the rear end bottom bolts can be removed with a deep socket on an extension it is an 8 inch. If you need a wobble it is a 9 inch. the table you seek is found typing ford rear axle identification on yahoo Good luck and maybe you will get lucky and the rear will be a 31 spline rather than a 28. To check for closed or posi jack up rear and spin one side.If the other side spins the same direction its closed.

me neither, but I've seen some interesting rearends under truck bed trailers. If it has 5.5" bolt pattern on the wheels, it's probably gonna be a 9"

Thanks Squirrel, and everyone else, for the help. The website you posted was a very good reference. I may pursue this rearend even thou it's not a posi (used as a generic term). Maybe I can find a posi third member down the road and I hate to see this unit possibly go to the s****er. I'm strange like that. I'll spend time and energy cleaning up something old and rebuild it instead of tracking down the new stuff. I guess that's what this is all about huh? I put a detroit locker in the 9" in my 55. When I had a shop years ago I fixed a couple 9" rears where the factory "posi" split in half, decided that was not the way to go. With a smaller engine, and non-sticky tires, it's not so much of a problem.
ill have to see what my 9" is. all i know is it came from the 1970 racnhero in my back yard. also i see where its mentioned "lucky if its 31 spline." im ***uming the 31 spline is stronger? finding out what gear ratio it has would be nice to know ( hope the tag is on the housing ). thanks for the info on the factory posi ( yeah gm term, but not sure what ford calls there posi.. wish they would of all used the same word on this one) if and when i ever need to go that rout will go after market. chris.
Your Ford pickup rear end is the WIDE ONE ... it is wider than the more desirable 57/72 model. It also has the 5 on 5.5 wheel pattern. Still a good rear end for parts and possibly a larger wider vehicle or a " rodent style rod " with the wheels sticking out past the body. .
Yeah Duece I forgot to measure it when I was crawling around underneath it but I'll check it today when I go to the shop. One thing for sure is you will never find my old *** in a "rodent style rod" so that's out. I'm thinking about another project for the future and haven't ruled out anything. It's like the best vehicle for the price wins, if you know what I mean. I've learned that all manufacturers have their signature part that is famous. The 9" just happens to be Fords and damn man they just look good sitting under there. Now lets get back to work.
