I just picked up a belly tank here in Portland, but totally by chance. I was taking my wife to work and a new Chevy pickup with an elderly couple went in front of us at an intersection, I blew the light and I flagged them down just as they were pulling into the s**** metal recyclers. The tank was in the back of their truck, they told me they had to clean out their 'woods' for their daughter's wedding this summer. It's not a P38 tank, probably a Thunderbolt or P51 unit, smaller, about 7 feet long. Very nice shape, I got it for 10 bucks. I'm building a dirt track racecar, late '40's vintage, the tank will make a great nose and tail, I'll add the hood and body in-between. I'm new to the HAMB, haven't figured out how to attach images yet, I'll post a photo of it as soon as I figure out the system.
i have some drop tanks.2 sizes,24''x13' and a 32'' x 24 footer, the small ones are kevlar, and the big one is alum. $200 for the small ones and $500 for the big one. located in archer fl. randy
There's an amazing one that's been built here in Belgium by the Vultures car club, flathead powered. I've seen it in real, the quality of the build is unbelievable. Go to their website http://www.vccb.be then click on "Custom" and scroll down to the belly tank. You can see loads of photos.
I have two BELLY tanks but can not find what they were from . Any dimensions that are known on the one's with removeable nose(rounded) and tail(pointed) sections would help... I'll round up my dimensions and report back here... paperdog
Actually, they have two more but they are really trashed. The decent one (the one I got) was the one they were hauling to the s****yard, go figure. The couple told me they had already hauled some to the yard before I flagged them down . They invited me to come up to their place and I drove up the same afternoon. The last two were welded together, mashed, half filled with water and half rusted out. I may still go get them, I probably could salvage a 'nose' or something from one of them.
I looking for a old Belly Tank car It was Jeraulds speed shops car out of National city Calif, #166 o cl*** in 1953 & #45 a cl*** in 1954. If you know where it car is CALL ME 619-994-8187 http://i381.photobucket.com/albums/oo260/BigDaddyUSMC/Motorama_1952_program2.jpg http://i381.photobucket.com/albums/oo260/BigDaddyUSMC/JerauldsBellyTanker2.jpg http://i381.photobucket.com/albums/oo260/BigDaddyUSMC/zHMC_073_Jerauld-Barber-54.jpg
I have a belly tank went 203 in'64 driven by Jerry Kugel (Kugel Komponents). Building rearengine dragster style lakester for the last 9 years. Hope to have it at Maxton this spring.
Lots of smaller diameter tanks, like the HAMBer from Maine found all over New England. They were bought for dock floats at summer camps as there were several big Air Force bases, in Maine and New Hampshire, at the time. Not unusual to be out deer hunting, come upon a closed up cabin on a body of water and see tanks shoved under the porch, waiting to go back in the water in the Spring.
I know a lot of you have already seen thise pictures, but for those of you who haven`t, here is mine. To see more go to;http://mccainautomotive.com I`ve started to dis***emble the car and paint it, and expect to have it finished within the next few months.
Where'd you get the canopy? Unlimited race plane? Never mind... I just read your website builds and saw that "Todds canopy company" bilt them. What determined the canopy shape and size? or were these some of his standard canopies for aircraft?
I got the canopy from http://toddscanopies.com The price was very reasonable, three for about $300. I made the frame.
There's going to be a belly tanker at the Salt Flats in 1-1/2 weeks. Check out info on this here: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=51567&page=173 Enjoy! Chris
I can't believe this surfaced after so many years... but I'm glad Mark VIII is sharing his tanker thread from the Garage Journal!
I wasn't sure if I should start a new thread or resurrect this one. Check out Lobello Racing on GJ Free Parking http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=112320. The car p***ed tech yesterday. Here's my latest update today: Well, they didn't get to start the belly tanker as I reported yesterday (8/12/11). They've been working out some problems today (carburetor wasn't prepped as thought). Hopefully it can run tomorrow to allow Jacob to get his license. Tom and Lou now have a "staff" p***, so they can go anywhere. They are acting as the safety crew for one of the San Diego Roadster Club cars. Weather is great, though there's talk of some precip tomorrow - everything stops if there's rain, so don't do any rain dances to end the drought!. The guys are Living the Dream, as Tom always says. Chris
Here's another update. I tried to post one yesterday, but it hasn't shown up yet. Today's update: They got the car push-started today, but it just wouldn't keep on running. They spent the day "tweeking" things and it's getting better. Picture the original early 1950s parts (carburetor, ignition, etc), just like you were there back in the day. That's exactly what is going on! If something breaks, there are no fabrication facilities, so they will be SOL. The good news is Jacob (the driver) was able to have the car push-started on the salt, so he got to get the feel of driving it. It just wouldn't keep going. So back to the pits for more work. Each time takes up to an hour plus waiting in line to try again. Tom is taking lots of pictures. They would look so cool in black and white. You probably wouldn't be able to tell it was anything but the '50. All of Fred's old Bonneville buddies are stopping, so it's a big reunion. Very fun! Tom's going to get a GJ photo opportunity tomorrow with his t-shirt. I'll copy/post this on the Lobello Racing thread in Free Parking (and maybe on the H.A.M.B. - let's see if this works!). Chris

The belly tanker was put on the trailer yesterday and Tom's coming home (that's not the less than exciting part for me!) The goal of being able to start it and run on the Salt Flats was accomplished. No land speed record though. Too many mechanical obstacles to overcome. It was a thrill for everyone involved, especially Jacob and Fred.
