I'm getting closer to shooting hi build urethane primer om my car. I have an old siphon gun suitable for shooting it but it has a 1.4 tip. I have seen others here recommend a bigger tip for hi build primers. My question is, are the tips for these guns sort of "universal", ie: one fits all ? If so, where can you find them ? Auto paint stores ? Have to order them ? Any help appreciated. Thanks, Tim

Yeah 1.4 I ok..just add a touch more reducer if your high build calls for any at all. I normally use a 1.7 for high bbuild but what you have will work.

TCP global sells a 2,5 gun for under 60.00 works great for these hi build primers. I also use it to shoot rhino hide under finders.

I appreciate the input. But what about the tips in case I ever need another size ? Are they interchangeable?

What primer specifically are you going to shoot ? You have gotten responses that a 1.4 is fine and one telling you a 2.5 is what you need. It all depends on the specific primer. A 2.5 is WAY to big for true primer, but is necessary for the spray poly that some peoplr refer to as a primer. I keep a 1.7 for my high build primer in addition to the 2.5 for the spray poly. I use my base gun with a 1.4 to lay down sealer, which in Spies Hecker and PPG, is just thier regular primer with reducer added to thin it out.

A 1.4 will shoot high build primer, but you'll have to have the tip way open, and will probably have to over reduce it a bit to get it to lay donw smooth.

No gun tips are not universal, you will need to go to the paint supplier with that gun in hand, so they can match it up. Depending on what brand gun it is you may have a hard time getting a tip set. Consider a new cheapo HVLP from Home Depot or an online retailer. Some of the cheap guns can still do a good job, plus going HVLP will use less paint

The tips are sort of interchangable, meaning that you have to change the tip and the needle (not sure what its called) as a set.
You really should look at buying a cheap HVLP gun most come with at least 2 tip sets , like 1.4 and 1.7, you well save more $$$$$ in the short run (not even long run) by getting the newer gun because you well use WAY less primer, I learned the hard way myself.

Not sure if you got the right info on "universal". The tips for a certain gun will interchange with other, different size tips "for the same gun!".
A tip for a Devilbiss will NOT fit a Sharpe. So, no they do not interchange in that respect. Order a new cap and needle set for your specific name and model gun and you should be OK. The old siphon guns work very well, but waste more material than the new HVLP guns. If only doing a car once in a while, I wouldn't bother. If spraying a lot, get the HVLP and save material AND money!
I use 1.4 for paint, and 1.8 or 2.0 for primer. High build is usually pretty thick and needs to go on that way. I also use the 2.0 tip for doing flake jobs, as the flakes, even some large pearls clog up the 1.4.
