Was taking the '66 F100 for a test drive a bit ago after getting the rear brakes back together and noticed a whining/whistling noise while driving. Not a real loud or grinding sound and it goes away when I apply just slight pressure to the clutch. Sounds like something needs adjusted but not sure what. This is my first standard ****** since way back in the early 80's so I'm a rook when it comes to clutches. Any advice would be appreciated. Its all mechanical linkage, no hydraulics.

I would say adjustment in clutch linkage, proably throwout bearing noise. On a side note was that your 66 at the last Steak and Shake show on Glenstone ?

Yeah that was it, the black primered one. As for the throwout bearing noise, which way do I need to adjust the rod, longer or shorter?

Adjust it so that you have at least 3/4 inch of play in the clutch pedal. Don"t know your linkage setup but would say shorter would work. Make sure your return spring is in good shape.

If you lengthened it doesn't that mean you have less clutch peddle freeplay? You might have gotten rid of the noise because the T/O bearing is riding on the PP all the time? aka more engagement that's not good. You might want to check to make sure.

Agree with 34toddster, you have it to tight. As said earlier there needs to be freeplay in the pedal. If the pedal has no soft travel before getting firm you have it to tight. This will only cause T/O bearing to go out sooner, wearout the finger on the PP, cause the clutch to slip and go out completely.

Question I forgot to ask before hand. Do you have a return spring for the clutch. Not knowing that app. can't tell you where it belongs. Some are at the fork and pull the fork away from PP and others can be anywhere on the linkage. This spring is what will hold pedal up in the cab to create the free play. Other wise the T/O bearing just rides on the PP all the time.

Yes its got the return spring down on the linkage. As for freeplay I've still got at least an inch.
