Yow! '54 Imperial. ;) Ya always like to see a MoPar this early
with the hood still attached. Means -- POSSIBLY -- the Hemi
may still be under there! Old Car City USA, White, Georgia.

The last hurrah! '54 Hudson Hornet in a rustic -- and rusty! -- setting.
Hood just sitting there, so maybe somebody already made off with
the 308 six and Twin-H power. Old Car City USA, White, Georgia.

Just been through every page:eek: In some ways its nice that these cars still are about but sad that owners won't let go of the better ones in many cases. Just looking at some of the parts available, what gold mines are out there, all those complete cars, 50's side trim etc just wasting away. What i'd do for some Buick portholes!!!!

    Great pics, thanks for posting

I was pretty fascinated by this series posted by Jalopy Junkie and SouthPaw on a more
general thread. Some are just plain RAW:(, and some evoke an almost artful AWE.
Seems and interesting thing to say about junked, mangled automobiles, eh?

If anybody out there has never seen one of these in operation in person, well, there's no
other sight more "depressing" for a car lover.:( What's that, an anniversary Buick, right?

A VW and Buick I found outside an old shop in Woodmere, NY sometime in the early 80's

  19. Not only is that a 1949 Cadillac, it's a Coupe de Ville. It's sad to see a once grand car look like nothing more than a donor vehicle if there's anything that's still salvageable.

Dan, considering the shots and processes YOU yourself do:eek:, that's a humbling (and undeserved) comment -- though much appreciated! :D

I'm 60, and my junkyardin' days are nearly (not quite:eek:) over, like the old-timey yards themselves!:( Two years ago TODAY:eek:, I mentioned on Post #1 that I wished I'd taken a CAMERA as a kid, considering the rarity and CONDITION of stuff that was already just sitting, mostly unwanted, in the late '60s and early '70s when I first got a license and could "roam" on my own. I suppose, THEN, it never even crossed my mind that those junkers would all be GONE some day.

But when I did Post #1, I was amazed and gratified that guys and gals felt the same sense of growing loss (sounds like an oxymoron, eh?). Steadily -- not in a torrent, as on some threads -- people have posted thousands of photos from a plethora of sources, including their own. Some have been ancient (automotively speaking), some just snapshots, lots of cell-phone pix (thank the LORD for the ease and compactness of THOSE! ;)), as well as many very artful photo images from FlickR, individuals and other sources from the 'net. The pix have been amateur and pro, but I've been grateful for them ALL, as you could talk for an hour just to convey a GLIMMER of what one photo can convey!:D

It's humbling to me that HAMB members have compiled the majority of this material in what I've come to consider a single, possibly unique, site on the HAMB where . I am very thankful to all who've supplied photos to make this such an enjoyable resource and experience for ALL.:) Though I have tried to be the best cheerleader and moderator I could be, I have contributed not one pic I've taken myself:eek:, so any credit goes to those who've posted their work and pertinent photos -- wherever they found them (I think, usually giving credit and location).

THANK YOU -- everyone -- for what I consider a priceless gift;), capturing images I did not, and never could capture by myself! Without YOU, it would not have happened. Without the HAMB, it COULD not have happened!:cool::cool:

This photo really takes me back. Not so much a junkYARD as cars IN a yard. The scene was once a common one along secondary highways and county/township roads:cool:, until the beautification programs begun in the Johnson administration, coupled with sometimes spiking scrap-metal prices, made such views quite rare.:( There's a '57 Chevy convertible :D that would be worth a small fortune today in restored or nicely rodded condition. The photo was taken by an Allentown, PA, newspaper photographer in June 1970; the ORIGINAL photo print is available, VERY reasonably, now on eBay. I ran onto it by search "junkyard photo photograph," should a HAMBer wish to hang it on the garage or den wall. The watermark shown here is not on the actual photo, please note.

Here's a really interesting photo that's for sale on eBay right now. It's offered by an Arkansas seller and is only headed, "Original Photo 1966 Howell Started to build Junkyard." I've never seen pix of a yard JUST getting started , so it would be keen to know who Howell was  and if he made a go of it! Anybody out that way happen to know of a yard -- or former yard -- by this name? And if a HAMBer wants to collect this pic, I found it while just searching "junkyard photo photograph."

Just a cool old-timey pic. No info, but it kind of speaks
for itself, eh? :p What's the guy holding? Wrench, gear-
shift? E-brake lever? And, is that mess he's disassem-
    bling an A?

Walt's in Topeka, KS, shot in 1962. Photos thanks to RoadKillontheWeb. I love this series,
because it is SO representative of what seems to be HUNDREDS of yards I've been in during
my life! You can smell the oil and gear lube on the ground, eh? Just a great VINTAGE
series of pix! Anybody know if Walt's survived and, if so, what it's called TODAY?

We've shown "the dreaded crusher" :( numerous times on this thread, but here's the best pic I've seen
of the OTHER destroyer of vintage tin! Ominously called THE SHREDDER , it does JUST THAT! Literally
grinds up cars and pickups, so the metal can be separated from plastics, glass and fabrics. The resulting
"product" is easily loaded in rail cars or on barges for shipment to mills -- who knows where? And, an
added bonus for some unscrupulous operators, the shredded vehicles are pretty much untraceable. ;) This
actual shredding operation -- a legitimate business, BTW -- was shot in late 1974 by a St. Petersburg, FL,
newspaper photographer, Stewart Thayer, and the original archive photo that was published back then
with a story is for sale to collectors on eBay. If interested, I ran across it searching "junkyard photo
    photograph."

Talk about a PILEUP! This retro glance THANKS to xFrameChevy! I recall
being a little incensed back in the late '60s or early '70s when Volkswagen
put out this ad. BUT, it's still a blast trying to ID all the cars!
