Projects I forgot how much I missed the smell of having an old car in the garage.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by RoadFarmer, Aug 18, 2011.

  1. I sold my caddy about 5 months ago and havn't had an old car in the garage since. Yesterday I brought my '55 home from storage to start tearing it down. When I walked through the garage this morning I was greeted by the sweet smell of old car and gas...mmmm
Am I crazy?! haha I was just glad it overpowered the diapers for once!

Anyone else know the car smell I'm talking about?

I'll try posting some pics of the teardown later. I'm gutting the interior and glass for now, then I'll be pulling out the I6 235 and three speed.

Not only that! but there is a distinct difference of smells between makers, at least I think there is! I can tell the difference between an old ford and old vw and 50s chevies!

btw thats the most realistic "crying kid in the corner" doll Ive ever seen!!:D
just kiddin, looks like he likes it as much as you!

  3. hahah I never even thought about the crying kid doll pose! He's such a Hamb!

That smell is better than the best perfume to me

I love sitting in my 53..it has the interior smell that just takes you back in time.

My A smells completely different..but still very much a signature of that era

It's awesome, isn't it?! What am I going to do if they eliminate pretroleum products before I die?

The other day my 10 year old daughter told me I smelled like old cars. She might have said old farts too but I'd like to think it was the old cars comment.

20 years ago was the first time i was introduced to "old car" smell. my '53 chevy had a distinct smell. sold it a long time ago, though.

fast forward to last winter, when i finally put my '52 wagon in the garage and, within a few days, the garage smelled exactly the same as that old car smell i remembered.

  11. No shit....I believe the 30s- 40's chevies [with stock interior] have the strongest smell.

  12. That is one of the best smells in the world

Back when I was driving a modern car for work everyday, I would occasionally go out to the garage and open a door on the 54 and just take a big long whiff.....then I was good for a while

Having been raised at the drag strip, I also love the smell of av-gas mixed with burnout smoke and cigarette smoke

My truck has been stored in a shop, and 2 different barns, since '94 I think. One day I
went out in the driveway and just sat in it. Feeling my ass almost hit the floor, from the
busted seat springs, grabbing a steering wheel that gets soo hot, sitting in the sun,
that you have to wear gloves (not to look cool), and smelling that old truck smell.
It took me right back to high school. And then remembering all of the times that she
broke down on me, and all of the times I was left walking home, or pushing that damn
truck. Man, I can't wait to drive her again.. :D

Nice looking ride you got there (from what I can see). A '56 is on my
    wish list..

Yeah, I have to agree with you on that one,. When I got my '46 home a friends son was there and I opened the door and told him to take a deep breath of that aroma. Then told him he'd never get it out of his system, it's in your soul, your very fiber from then on!

My wife calls the smell "Dad's home cooking, like something is always burning". She obviously doesn't have a problem with it because she's always out here with me. It settles me down after a long day at work.

Got a '57 Buick and a '59 Chevy (which will be for sale soon) and the smells are hypnotic! I grew up in a junkyard in the 50s and my brother and I played in 30s, 40s and 50s cars all day long. The smells can't really be described - ya hafta experience 'em.
