Have money down while motor is being rebuilt. Its a 1961 Plymouth Savoy 2 door Sedan,FACTORY Column 3 speed, Radio & Heater deletes, Factory ORIGINAL 413 Sonormatic X-Ram motor! Car only has 10,501 ORIGINAL miles. Car was ordered new by the Allisons for a street-car, hence the 413 X-Ram as only about 200 came with that motor in Fury Golden-Commandos and not known how many were stick-shifts (no 4 speeds available). Car was resold in mid-80s by the Allisons business manager and I have that Bill-of-Sale on company stationery AND witnessed by Davey Allison (deceased) and J. or G.(?) Allison. Document lists Bobby as cars' owner with the VIN # . Also have the Broadcast sheet. Bobby remembers the car and as soon as the motor is ready and installed I'm hauling it to him for some signatures. In the pictures a motor just like this one is in another car ('63) but painted wrong for '61 (block was Red/Cross Intakes were Gold). Car has NO rust, new paint, tires, interior and front Disc brakes (now stops straight). Presently has a H.P. 440 in it and is it FAST! Kept ALL of old brakes setups. Looking for a dash speaker cover (go figure-out of all possible needed parts). Will take to shows, get Galen Goviers verifications and resell when price ($?) is right. I lucked out.
Still working on my "Battlebird" and hope to have at the Moonshine Festival. Tom

    Way too cool!
Always have wondered how those X-rams were on a cold start up?
I saw one in a Fury, the air cleaners almost touch the fenders!

Thanks for all the great comments. Would you believe I was once known as "Mr. 409" then all FORDS for the past 13 years, but I love a "sleeper" of ANY AMERICAN automobile. I agree its UGLY as HELL, but thats what makes it so cool as a "SLEEPER"...didn't even have any "scare-badges" (Fender-Flags). It looks like the Plymouth engineers took the back end of a '58 Chevy, put it up front and added headlights, then took the upcoming '63 Chrysler front end/put it on the back of the '61s WITHOUT the headlights or grille! Yes, they were a bear to keep going when cold as the gas "puddled" in the plelum chambers below the carbs and then the motor flooded out. BUT LOOKOUT warmed up as they beat EVERYTHING off the line (incl 409s and Royal Pontiacs) but had a terrible column shift to 2nd but still won MANY championships. Look up "Ramchargers". Tom

Love that car, love the 2 door post Mopars of this era (obviously), hope they didn't drill out the dash to stick that cluster of gauges under the dash. The speaker cover on the dash is usually the first thing to go, they're shitty plastic and disintegrate in the sun under those fish-bowl windshields. NOS ones come up on eBay occasionally, but they ain't cheap, so if you find one, don't hesitate.

I don't see what everyone thinks is ugly about these cars, I happen to love the styling.

I thought the 61 cross rams were 383's? seems like I had an old HOT ROD where they did a road test on a 61 Dodge post with the crossram 383.

to fully appreciate the beauty of these ugly ducklings you have to actually own one. took me about 18 years to get used to my 61 Dodge 2 door post.

In '60 the biggest you could get was a 383, but 413 was optional in '61, at a factory rating of 375hp.

I'd love a cross-ram setup for my '62 Chrysler Newport 2 door post car.

Very cool ... the "Ultimate Sleeper"!

I'd suggest that you also post this over on the ForwardLook.net forum ... they'd really appreciate it over there ... but don't call it "UGLY" (them's fightin' words to a FWDLKer :D) ... plus they'd probably be able to help you out with your search for the missing dash speaker cover.

That is an awesome car. Those pre-muscle era OEM hot rod Mopars were just badass. I really like that one in cheapie disguise.. and air conditioning!

You are exactly correct. The topic of '60-61 413 Dodge and Plymouths comes up from time to time on the ForwardLook.net message board. Here's the most recent info I found-

Is this last car mentioned (350hp 413 Savoy out of CO) your car?

No this is not the Colorado car. It is/was totally unknown as it was ordered by the Allisons (NASCAR Allisons) by special order and came from the factory with the 3 speed-413 X-Ram motor, then sold to Alabama where it resided inside and not run much until purchased about 6 months ago to Georgia. The 2nd owner had a screwed up 361 in it and the COMPLETE 413 X-Ram motor was in the trunk. I'm told the cross rams (pr.) are worth $5K by themselves! A LOT of them were thrown away "back in the days" when they were a problem on the street cars. Will get more info on the car as I get it.

One more thing, the picture of the engine is one of another car ('63 Chrysler 300) and NOT my engine...but what they look like. Mine does NOT have A/C or any other power options as the one in the picture does.

Thats almost reason enough to go to the Moonshine Festival! I've been wanting to go for several years now but something has always come up. It would be really awesome if similar Ford, Merc, and maybe a Chev could all be displayed with it, all baseline models with biggest engine available, steelies & dog dish caps! Saw a 61 Mercury Meteor (full-size car) down that way at a show several years ago. It too was white with little hubcaps, and the Hi-Po solid lifter 390 and manual trans. These cars done in this style are just too cool!

Yes, my friend talked to him and he remembers the car. He asked if it still has the original 413 X-Ram and if it ever ran right on the street. Said it was "fast as Hell AFTER it warmed up"! A good friend knows him and I plan to meet with Bobby at the Museum or Moonshine Festival ( I'm 70 and been to THOUSANDS of shows and the Moonshine is THE BEST- hands down!!). This year it is also the National Galaxie meet...more 427s and Cammers than anywhere in Galaxies and '57 Fords + LOADS of '39 & '40s REAL Moonshine cars (about 50-60). Next to last weekend in Oct....rooms are sold out---have to book in surrounding townsto Dawsonville, Ga ( Bill Elliot's Hometown) and North of Atlanta.

  25. Hey Tom, this'll make you sick, I had a '61 Belvedere about 18 years ago, Column shift, slant 6... Running, driving car, sold it to a guy who only wanted it for the hood for his '60 in St Pete, for $50 more than I paid for it 2 years earlier... $200... And I know it had the speaker grill.

When I say a car is UGLY I don't mead its really "Ugly"!? Its like that proverberial fat girl at a bar near closing...she looks better the more beers you have and the later it gets. This car looks better the more you look at it and if ever in a street drag, you end up "makin' LOVE to it"!

Nice car Tom! Any chance this will be down at Teddie and Tom's shop? I'd love to see it.I used to own a dual quad 58 Fury,so i love those era Mopars. Met Bobbie A. many years ago at Ralph Harris' race shop. He was driving the green NASCAR chevy truck that we built.
